Debenhams Travel insurance took my money but no policy arrived

Hi all,

I recently bought travel insurance from Debenhams when I clicked through from Moneysavingexperts link to Moneysupermarket in search of a good deal. Debenhams wasn't the cheapest but suited my requirements and offered a Debenhams voucher too.

Moneysupermarket sent a confirmation email of my purchase which advised I would get an email and further details from Debenhams, but this has never arrived. Neither has the voucher arrived.

My trip has been done, and thankfully I didn't need to make any claims, but felt very uncomfortable that they took my money and haven't made contact. I just wanted to relate that here to give a heads-up that even though I found Debenhams Insurance via this trusted site and its sister site Moneysupermarket, I'm not happy with the lack of service provided.

I tried emailing them to no avail. Has this happened to anyone else?

Did you contact Debenhams before you went to see if you were covered?
What lack of service? did you contact them about the lack of a policy?

OP, the onus remains with YOU to ensure you've received all your necessary documents, why on earth would you go on holiday ASSUMING you're covered? Thankfully nothing happened, but really you need to be forward thinking and proactive to ensure all your documentation is up to date, easily accessible should you need it.

It's like saying, I got car insurance, I never received my paperwork, money was taken out so assumed I was covered, so I drove my vehicle......until you get involved in a car accident and discover that if you'd received and read your paperwork there were exclusions and you'd be f*****ed!

No OP, be responsible and ensure all paperwork is received BEFORE going on holiday.

Also when you email these organisation don't they send an autoreply that your email will be replied to within X time? Have you checked your junk mail incase you ticked, email me documentation?

Why not contact Debenhams travel insurance department and find out if a policy was issued, you never know you may be due a refund

Of course you should follow it up. Use the confirmation email to help you get started but like others I'm amazed you went away without a policy number or anything. I'd try calling them or go into a Debenhams and get them to do it for you.

Thanks for this. You jogged my memory to do a 'belt and braces' on my car insurance. I'm happy with my renewal quote so was going to auto renew then realised the renewal date is when I'm away over Easter. Feel much happier now that I've spoken to someone, paid up front today and I've got the policy number and breakdown number should I need it.

:)Thanks for all the helpful responses its much appreciated guys and gals! Disappointed to see a little snarkiness creeping into the forum. I went away without a copy of the policy or any contact from debenhams themselves, but not without a policy number that moneysupermarket provide in their email confirmation.

I tried to contact Debenhams for a couple of days before I left (it was the weekend) to no avail, though I did have a confirmation email from Moneysupermarket and those emails include a policy number. I also took my ehic card with me as well as copies of my passport in case it got lost etc etc. I like to be prepared. I shall take the good advice offered and try and follow up with Debenhams as soon as I get a moment. Nothing in my email trash so thats not the answer either. It all seems a little odd. Thanks folks. You've got me on the right track.

I'm sorry you see my comment as "snarky", but I'm flabbergasted you left without the relevant info, as I said you are very lucky nothing happened.

Yes which they never mentioned in the OP, but I guess policy number only is ok?!?!?!? what number would they have dialled should they have required medical attention, I have so many what if scenarios!?!?!?
  • Hey masterpoo I mentioned a little snarkiness but I pointed no finger at you. I wouldn't dream of being judgemental, shouty and ranty and using a negative tone on any help forums. I'll try again to make contact with Debenhams, and let you know what the response is. I travelled within the EU where many don't bother with insurance, and I carried nothing of value, but I prefer to be sensible and get cover for unforseen eventualities. Thanks all for your help.

You say many don't bother with insurance within the EU - this is a false economy - EU hospitals (unlike our own) won't treat you for free.
I have never holidayed abroad without insurance and never would - just in case.
