Paying council tax
Comments
-
The simplest example is for a full years council so;
Council tax is due in full at the start of the year however they have to give a statutory concession to payment over 10 monthly payments.
The LGFA 2012 however gives the payer a right to request to pay the full year over 12 months - the council don't have to offer it as a standard payment plan but the have to apply the 12 month instalment plan upon a written request.
The concession to instalments can be withdrawn for late/non-payment.
(Clearly things change is bills are issued later in the year etc etc).
Ah...that explains why my new-to-me Council didn't automatically continue with that 12 monthly plan I had arranged. They were clearly waiting to be made to do so by law, whereas my last Council had already implemented this over 20 years ago to my knowledge. But then my last Council was actually efficient....and I thought all Councils were.....LOL.0 -

That was always how I saw it too. I have to earn-as-I-go, so that means I intend to pay-as-I-go.
Now if they could arrange that my yearly income comes to me in one fell swoop at the beginning of the year - so that I can put it in an account somewhere and get some interest on it, then it would be much appreciated:rotfl:0 -
The problem is that councils are still required to pass the charges they collect for the police and fire brigade over in 10 payments so if the council has to spread payments over a longer term it means the monthly income level drops for the council.Ah...that explains why my new-to-me Council didn't automatically continue with that 12 monthly plan I had arranged. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
I didn't know that.
Now wondering if my new-to-me Council has been setting money aside for when this 2012 provision came into law and no-one who has set up the 12 monthly debits can "accidentally" fall back into a 10-monthly basis.
I have the feeling I'd better not bet on it...as the impression I have of them is that they aren't exactly rolling in money.0
