Paying council tax

Hi,
So heres my question,
Council tax is paid 10 out of the 12 months, I rented my property out and moved back in last October, But I still had to pay for the 11th and 12th month even though the council will have received months 1-10 from my ex tenants,
Seems like they are getting an extra 2 months payment for nothing?
Im sure its just how im looking at it but could do with someone breaking it down and explaining in idiot terms so I can get my head round it
Thanks

CT liability is calculated daily regardless of the 10 month payment plan.
So if you are liable for months 11 and 12 you pay. If the T has already payed under a 10m payment plan they will get a refund.0 -
ok thanks, so on that basis, im moving out in May so will I be due a refund for the payments I would have made up that point0

Council tax is paid usually in 10 instalments from 1 April to 1 January each year with none due in February and March so they would only have made 8 payments in that tax year if they just paid until October. You would have had to pay the remaining 2 payments and also your tenants are only liable for payments up until they moved out so as the previous poster said they would have received a refund for the period from October to 31 March 2015 if they overpaid.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. I would have thought every Council would HAVE to take CT payments spread out over 12 months if the house-owner stated it was going to be paid that way?
I told my last Council that was how I would be paying it over 20 years ago. Told once and it then continued that way thereafter.
I told my current Council that's what I do when I moved here and found I had to tell them again when the next Council Tax year started (they'd told me originally that they didn't have the facility to automatically continue taking the payments in subsequent years on a 12 month basis!!!!!!). So I had to tell them again this year - but I gather they have finally updated their system (over 20 years after my last Council got that facility!) and I shouldn't have to tell them again. I asked for and got an email from them confirming I will never have to tell them again and the automatic continuance of this is now in place on their systems.0 -
A payment plan is a concession. CT is an annual charge and should be paid at the beginning of the billing period. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I think maybe Councils say that right is a "concession"?? But, as far as I know, they always accept we do have the right to say that we will be paying our CT that way, provided we aren't bad bill-payers.
After all, even a Band D CT bill in my own area for instance is around £1,000 for a single person. Not an amount most could find out of one months income.0 -
The simplest example is for a full years council so;
Council tax is due in full at the start of the year however they have to give a statutory concession to payment over 10 monthly payments.
The LGFA 2012 however gives the payer a right to request to pay the full year over 12 months - the council don't have to offer it as a standard payment plan but the have to apply the 12 month instalment plan upon a written request.
The concession to instalments can be withdrawn for late/non-payment.
(Clearly things change is bills are issued later in the year etc etc).I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Considering that liability accrues on a daily basis, paying in full at the start of the year is just a scam to get free loans...0
