Hi,
We're flying from Gatwick in June and arriving into Euston.
What is the most cost effective way of getting to Gatwick?
There's two of us. One has a 16-25 railcard. returning 6 days later.

Lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.

2 options by rail
1. Victoria line from Euston to Victoria and then the Southern stopping service to Gatwick Airport (generally stops at Clapham Jcn & East Croydon - only a few minutes longer than the Gatwick Express)
2. Walk up Euston Road to St Pancras low level (about 10 minute walk) and take the Thameslink service to Gatwick airport
The most cost effective way by rail is to get an Oyster card and use it to touch out at East Croydon and then buy a single from east Croydon to Gatwick Airport0 -

Number 59 or 68 bus to Waterloo = £1.50
Easybus from Waterloo to Gatwick = from £2.00
If you have the time, that is.0 -
w211 certainly has the cheapest possible option but the bus to Waterloo can take 45 minutes and the bus to Gatwick can take an hour and a half depending on traffic.
Thameslink from St Pancras, the trains go from the platforms at the back of the station, will take around 50 minutes to Gatwick with no changes, but you will either have to walk for 10 minutes along the Euston Road or spend a silly amount of time taking the tube one stop but that either way that would be my preferred choice. Otherwise take the Victoria line to Victoria which should take 15 minutes plus getting too and from platforms and take a Southern Service from platforms 15-19 at Victoria. The idea of using an Oyster card is not practical for a one time user, not only do you have to pay a deposit but I suspect you would have to get out at East Croydon, register as having gone through the exit and then buy a ticket from there to Gatwick
Whatever you do, check a week before travel to make sure there are no engineering works if you are travelling at the weekend as the routes from both St Pancras and Victoria seem to be popular with the engineers!0 -
Plenty of horror stories online about easyBus so if you definitely want to make your flight it's probably best avoided.
Victoria Underground station is horrendous at the moment due to all the construction work going on, so I'd make the walk to St Pancras and take Thameslink from there. If you've got lots of luggage a taxi between Euston and St Pancras wouldn't be too expensive.0 -

Although the Thameslink is certainly the simplest way to do this journey, due to the long term works at London Bridge (until Jan 2018), the trains are being diverted and the journey time to Gatwick is extended. It now takes 60-70 mins from St Pancras - Gatwick, depending which train you get. Still simple and direct though, if not the cheapest way.
Good advice about checking engineering works.0 -
Just to let you know that you can now use a contactless debit/credit card in place of an Oyster card and get the same limited daily rate.
Cash is not accepted on London buses.
