Replacement wheel nut removal tool?

  • This happened to me last week - went to National Tyres to get replacements and no locking nut. Not something I checked when I purchased the car and because it had been in for a service and MOT I assumed it was in there. Had to pop down to the Audi garage and pay £43 :( But at least it's there and I have peace of mind should I need to change tyres in future.

Just take it to a Ford main dealer, they will have the correct key & no danger of any damage.

If that's the case, why did I get a phone call from my local Ford main dealer last month when I was having the steering rack on my Mondeo Mk4 replaced, saying "we can't find your locking wheel nut tool?"

First port of call, is search the car again. Loads of cars are traded-in and weird and wonderful, "safe places" are found for locking wheel nut keys, amongst others. Don't just look under the mats, lift the boot carpet and feel under the seats. Peer into the double skinned sections and inside battery/fuse-box/air filter covers.
If that fails, as above, go to a professional tyre fitting place. They are never beaten: Get them all taken off, throw them away and fit replacement ordinary bolts/wheels from a scrappy.

I will add ashtrays (if the car has been owned by a non smoker) and all the door card cubby holes, as well as rear pockets in the back of the driver's/passenger seats.

To save the cost of having to get you a new one. They won't have every shape in stock, so may have to wait for one to be ordered in,

Probably because they too cheapskate to pay for the McGard master key set ;) (assuming you have the Ford/McGard locks fitted)

It's a good job they found the key when they looked a bit harder then.

For anyone who is interested, I finally got round to getting this sorted this weekend.

I went to my local Ford dealership and spoke to the Parts department for a replacement tool, they said that without the part number they would be unable to order one for me.

So I went to a garage next door and they got the locks off somehow and replaced them with generic nuts. I paid £70 all in including an inside/outside car wash. I thought this wasn't too bad.

Anyway thanks for all the help and advice in here, useful as always!

I was checking the condition of the brakes on my car last week, so I took each wheel off in turn. I was about to take the last wheel off when the locking key broke.
I contacted the dealer who would have had to order the correct item at £38. Checked on eBay and got a genuine replacement for £19 delivered and it arrived two days later
