I have 2 Piggles and both the Petshop and the vet told me to make sure you never give them straw only hay. Piggles burrow into their beds and straw is too hard for them and can damage their eyes.
I line the bed side of their hutch with an old newspaper, then a layer of sawdust, then hay.
The other thing that was mentioned is that although piggles love veg avoid giving them Lettuce and Cucumber as they have high water content which can make them ill.
Our Piggles love dandelion leaves more than anything else so if you go for a walk take a bag and fill it - they will love you for it!0 -
Have you got pics? I'd love to see themBulletproof0

I dont know if I'm supposed to mention another site on here but if you go on guineapigcages.com theres LOADS of info on there.
I've got three guinea pigs now, all male. Indoors in c+c cages (they were all together but two of them had a 'little' arguement recently so they're seperated.)
Mine are also on fleece (with two layers of towels underneath) which is alot cheaper than sawdust (also some people say sawdust is bad for them, but i cant remember which type now lol) I have no problems with the washing machine here. I've got one of the rubber dog grooming mits which I use to get all the hay and hair off.
Anyway hope thats helped someone...May Grocery Challenge -£216/4000 -
Hope somebody can give advice please. I put my guinea pigs out today at about 8.45am. They were enclosed in a metal run which has metal poles you stick into ground, so it cant be moved. They also have a wooden house that you attach to the side of the run- which has a ramp so they can go into house if cold or it it rains or scared etc. When i came to bring them in at about 5pm- the wooden house had been badly attacked- something had been biting/ chewing/ at it- probably to get at guinea pigs i presume. We have a shared access garden as its a terraced house. At the bottem of garden is a 10 foot wall- housebacks onto ours and next door is a carpark- quite a bulit up area. now here is the question- is it likely a fox would have done this in the daytime? The car park next door isnt very busy but there would of been cars coming and going or is it more likely to be a dog that has got in and done this? I am scared of puting pigs out again- but it seems cruel to keep them in indoor hutch when its warm? Any thoughts/ ideas on how to stop this happening again would be aprecited- my daughter is devastated and from damage to house( luckily we always put heavt bricks on top as lip opens to stop anything lifting lid) it looks like whatever it was was disturbed before it got to pigs0- though i guess if they ran to corner of run- if it destroyed house it wouldnt have been able to get in run as well?0

Hmm..
Maybe you could keep the guinea pigs in doors for one day and put a camera in your window? see if anything is wondering around?
If your worried, maybe get something to protect your little hutch?
Glad your guinea pigs are ok though!I'm getting married in August 2015:j0 -
Could be-depends on the damage- a lost ferret. They are small but extremely strong-and have 'hands' with powerful claws on them. Our local foxes aren't that brave even though they have no real enemies ,but I have seen them out in other parts of town in daylight .Don't like to say it -but rats might be after the food. Both rats and ferrets are extremely intelligent. If it's a lost ferret they will usually pop up somewhere as they are very fond of human company on the whole.0
