It won't make a difference if you have boars or sows as long as they are a) definitely both the same sex and b) they are paired up as babies.

I show guineas and have given a number of baby boars to a friend who runs a rescue, to pair up with adult boars who have come in for rehoming. The adult boar looks after the younger one and I have never had a problem. DO NOT try this with 2 adult boars though!

Great advice from others about not putting a rabbit and a guinea together. I know that a few do get on but I have seen some horrible injuries to guineas from a rabbit's powerful hind legs.

If you want to find a responsible breeder/ rescue in your area, you could try the national cavy club. Not sure of exact address but google will soon find it.

    Best of luck!

    Hiya,

We bought two baby guinea pigs back in the summer and then agreed to look after a friends for 2 weeks whilst she was on holiday thinking it was a female the same as our two- obviously not as when we fed them last night there were 4 baby piglets in the cage and the other female is showing a very large wriggly tummy too!!

I would like to know if we need to do anything special to look after the piglets and mum too, and should we seperate the other sow, who appears to be helping out with the babies at the moment...

    any advice would be great!

  • He he this is what happened to us too
    Arent they so cute
Our 2 ladies gave birth to 3 each on the same day
We didnt seperate ours and all the babies just had milk from whoever was nearest. There was never any bad feelings with the mums
Im sure in the wild it would be the same so I say leave them to it
Add a little good vegetables to the diet and some orange for vit C
You can also get special drops for their water from pet shops.
Do you have any pictures id love to see them?
Theres loads of good websites about with breeders advice why not google them?

This happened to my neighbour too, they are the cutest little things (the pigs, not the neighbours) :D:D Neighbour had no idea what to do, so she left them as they were but kept a close eye on them for any signs of trouble but they were fine.

I'd love to see a pic too :T

Keep up your normal routine of feeding and cleaning. Make sure their diet is well balanced (proper guinea pug food, lots of roughage (hay) and fresh veg). They will of course now need MORE food and cleaning as the babies eat food as soon as they are born.

The main precaution you should take is to move the cage to a quiet spot in the house and give them lots of peace and quiet. A pregnant GP can get into a lot of trouble if she is startled.

Bear in mind that first time GP mums can have problems while giving birth (as can experienced mums). So be thankful that mum1 is doing well. Also, sometimes the babies seem to be doing well and then unfortunately die. And Mum can have serious trouble delivering.

the Mum's are best kept together, they do not need to be separated and will both help out with all the babies. in fact they could get more upset if you do separate them.

Now you have to try and find good homes for them!

Also, the males have to be moved into their own cage after 3 weeks or they can mate with all the females!
  • gps are born able to walk eat and drink within a few hours fully furred its a survival thing u can separate at 3 wks but they wont be interested until 6 in my opinion. then get a vet to sex them
