Student Loan for 2nd Degree - 30 years later?

I did a BA Hons degree back in 1985-88, when I was 18. This was funded by a grant as I was from a single parent family.
I would love to do another, more useful degree to improve my earning capacity, but it appears, as I have already done a funded degree, albeit thirty years ago, I am not eligible for a student loan.
Please can anyone confirm this? Or are there any other avenues for funding I can try?
I cannot afford to pay myself and my employer won't help as this would mean they would lose me.

Who told you that you weren't eligible? If it was Student Finance then I would take their word for it but if that's a result of general internet searches then I would suggest phoning Student Finance and asking them directly.
This is from Gov.uk.Generally, you’ll only get student finance if you’re doing your first higher education qualification. This is true even if your previous course was self-funded.
However, you may still get limited funding if, for example:- you change course
- you leave your course but decide to start again
- you’re ‘topping up’ a higher education qualification, eg you’ve finished an HNC, HND or Foundation Degree and now want to do an honours degree
You're situation isn't listed in the examples but unless you ask them to confirm you can't be certain. Good luckApologies for any typos, my phone can't handle the forums.0 -
Hi,
no you won't qualify if you already have a degree no matter how long ago you qualified.
You may well still qualify for bursaries or grants from your chosen uni or charities. Your work may help you?£1000 Emergency fund No90 £1000/1000
LBM 28/1/15 total debt - [STRIKE]£23,410[/STRIKE] 24/3/16 total debt - £7,298

What degree are you looking to study? Nobody can tell you no unless they know this.0

Erm...
I did a BA in Archaeology and graduated in 1992.
I then did a Bsc in Midwifery and graduated in 2006.
I got FULL Student Loan for BOTH degrees. I told them about the first degree when I applied for the second.
So Yes, you can get funding twice...0 -
Which is why Taiko wants to know the degree that the OP is considering - Midwifery is a rather different funding prospect than (for example) Media Studies.0

ELQ (equivalent level qualification) rules mean that apart from some exceptions such as a PGCE, Medicine and Midwifery (and a couple more) you are not eligible for any SLC funding for a second degree course if you gained a qualification on the first degree course.0 -

Spammer? Certainly spouting nonsense, so I think so, but feel free to make up your own mind.0 -
Ahhhh! I apologise - I rather ignorantly believed that if it applied to me, then it must apply to all! Didn't realise there were different rules for different degrees.
Makes a weird kind of sense I guess, otherwise there would be "Eternal Students" who potter through life taking degree after degree....
