Do I think calling someone a name, once, with some however unwarranted reason requires police involvement? No.

Thank you for the constructive comments from the majority of people. The Police have called me back and passed it to the local Bobbies. They made it quite clear that they were VERY HAPPY to help as this type of behaviour is unacceptable and an actual offence. I reiterated that I didn't want to waste their time but they said it is sadly routine these days and left unchecked can evolve into something more serious. Quote-"A gentle word should do the trick."

To those who thought I "overreacted" then I assume that if someone in a professional capacity called you an extremely offensive name in the comfort of your home thinking they would get away with it, you will be happy to let them do that? Lets not forget we are talking about someone supposedly quite high up in a professional business who according to his website profile "prides himself in his customer service". This isn't some kid in the street running past and calling you a t**t.
Has everyone lost their sense of respect, should we just "get used" to people running around doing and saying whatever they will without consequence? Sad days indeed. The matter is now closed and as most of ours Mothers would have told us. "If you having nothing nice to say then say nothing at all."
Thank you again to those that "understood".

We are talking about a new car salesman only barely a step up from a secondhand car salesman.

I always say there are 2 sides to every story. We only have one side of the conversation, there has to have been a reason the salesman used that word. Just saying.

I agree that the word was unacceptable and I would have no hesitation in complaining to his manager.

    You called the police

That sort of exaggerated overreaction is generally known as 'taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut'.

It makes you appear unreasonable and vindictive.
