No. If purchasing an physical TomTom, then yes that might be a reasonable assumption that it applies to the lifetime of the device. However when downloading an App for your Phone, it would either apply to the Phone or the User. Apps have no intrinsic 'lifetime'. They are only withdrawn when the company providing it decides to. A 'lifetime' promise tied to the 'life' of the app would be worthless and no normal person would assume that.

According to the OP, TomTom have removed the app from sale and will stop sending updates in October. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the app has come to the end of its life. The OP also states that the free updates have been going on for 'years'. A long time in technology terms.

Nope the phone works at the same time via hands free if needed. The phone is on charge while being used in the car.
Personally I usually only use Satnav for the last 3 or 4 miles of a journey. If people can't find their way to a whole town or city in the UK, I'm not sure they should be driving. ;):D

I am not as organised as you and I only got a new Satnav last year so I have got to justify it for a couple more years:D The Here maps look good though!

Isn't it a bit hard to navigate and use the phone at the same time never mind trying to drive:eek:

It maybe ok for small trips but until they improve smartphone battery life I think I will keep my Satnav.
A smartphone will beat out a satnav on battery life every time. TomToms have a maximum battery life of 2-3 hours. Even low-end smartphones can got for at least 4.
If you find it hard using the phone while driving, it is still cheaper to buy a second smartphone for £50 which can act as a dedicated satnav, cheaper and more capable.

I wrote up this sorry mess at http://pgregg.com/blog/2015/04/tomtom-go-launched/

Also note that my TomTom purchase was 1.5 years ago, so my "lifetime" maps had a pretty short "life".
