Yes the maps are downloaded over WiFi so can be used without using Data.

Depending on the app used. Some are more user-friendly than others when it comes to downloading offline maps. Some still need a data connection for making the initial route guidance (or so it seems).

I use Navmii (formerly NavFree) on my Nexus 4.

Here maps and navigation can be used with the phone off line. The only data I used last week on a trip to Wales was less than 1mb; for the live traffic info. If I'd turned that off then it wouldn't have even used that.
You can flip between on/offline from within the app settings if required. I don't bother though and have never used any significant data as all the UK maps are downloaded to my phone.

Looks like I've also been suckered by TomTom... Really unhappy that my supposed "lifetime maps" ends on October 2015.

Don't buy a TomTom. Get iGo. Far better anyway :)

I fail to see the point in anyone, with a smartphone, forking out for a dedicated Satnav unless they are driving for a living, even then it's a close call.

Isn't it a bit hard to navigate and use the phone at the same time never mind trying to drive:eek:

It maybe ok for small trips but until they improve smartphone battery life I think I will keep my Satnav.

Surely to goodness, most reasonably intelligent people should realise that, in this situation, 'lifetime' means until the product is obsolete / no longer supported and not the lifetime of the buyer.

Nope the phone works at the same time via hands free if needed. The phone is on charge while being used in the car.
Personally I usually only use Satnav for the last 3 or 4 miles of a journey. If people can't find their way to a whole town or city in the UK, I'm not sure they should be driving. ;):D

Its Tomtom's choice to advertise it as 'Lifetime', they didn't have to, no one forced them. Its for them to understand what they are advertising, they could have quite easily said free updates for 3 years, they chose to call it lifetime.

No. If purchasing an physical TomTom, then yes that might be a reasonable assumption that it applies to the lifetime of the device. However when downloading an App for your Phone, it would either apply to the Phone or the User. Apps have no intrinsic 'lifetime'. They are only withdrawn when the company providing it decides to. A 'lifetime' promise tied to the 'life' of the app would be worthless and no normal person would assume that.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

Where are you getting this from? On iOS the apps are still in the store as usual and no mention of TomTom GO.
