Thanks everyone. I do think it will be Singapore we go for, just for a few days. Seeing Raffles and the Zoo should be good. We also want to see Sydney so probably will just get a flight from there to Tasmania after a few days there too.

However, next time I go, as I live in the Midlands, I might try Etihad from Birmingham, although the thought of the very long final flight puts me off a bit.
From my one experience with Etihad, the big let-down is transiting in Abu Dhabi airport, overcrowded, sweaty and uncomfortable (the opposite of Dubai / Emirates). Unless they have built a new one in the last couple of years.

Btw Singapore Airlines fly from MAN if that is more convenient than LHR.

You might want to consider booking flights from a European airport (Amsterdam/Paris/Frankfurt/possibly Dublin) so that you're not paying long haul rates of UK APD, and book cheap flights from Birmingham to that airport separately.

Sounds risky. How should they manage the risk?

You might want to consider flying the "wrong way" with Air New Zealand, and having a stopover in Los Angeles.

Assuming 'many' should really be 'manage', make sure there's a long enough gap between arrival and departure.

It's December, so how long is a long enough gap?

    Night before.

Another alternative is to go via South Africa. Due to the curvature of the earth it is only one hour more in flying time.
