Dd named driver - responsible for debt?
My idiot DD was persuaded to be named driver on her (ex)boyfriend's policy, as he was a learner. She put her name, address etc down, and he put his car details, credit card etc for payment. Now, he has not paid the insurance and sold the car, and she has sheepishly showed me two letters from debt recovery companies - one for the insurance she knew about (£270) and one for £70 for god knows what, from a different company. We will ring them tomorrow but wondered if anyone knows whether she is liable for this debt, as it was not her policy. Thanks for any replies. We have already had the lecture

What do you mean by named driver. Was the policy in her name with the bf as a named driver or was the bf the main driver on the policy and she was a named driver ?0

Are you/she sure the policy wasn't in her name - from what you said in your OP it looks a possibility!
If so there is a lot more trouble for her as if the insurer cancelled the policy for non payment, then she will now have a cancelled policy on her record to disclose to other insurers for ever more!0 -
If it was her policy then there is a strong likelyhood that the policy has now been cancelled with all the problems that brings with it. Future insurance will cost far more than now, most comparison site's will not be able to quote, restricted insurers willing to quote. etc0

Thanks for swift replies. She thought she was being added as named driver but it is possible that the insurance was in her name I suppose. She's 18 and hasn't had experience of this before. She has her own car and I presume that is in her name (Dad pays, I'm not in touch). But they didnt send her any documents, so we dont have a policy number to ask Elephant about it (I already tried). Sounds like this is going to be more of a problem than just paying up0

If it is her policy and it has been cancelled then she will have to declare this to her current insurer. This may cause her current insurer to cancel her current policy (many will not insure drivers who have had a cancelled policy), Massively increase the price of the policy or may have no affect at all (highly unlikely though). Failure to declare this to her current insurer could see them void her insurance in the event of an accident and leave her with major problems.
You really need to find out for definite if she is the policy holder and if the insurance has been cancelled or not.0 -
Just had heated convo with DD. Looks like she could have had the policy in her name, but she says it was cancelled properly by him, but then the sc**bag didn't pay the cancelling charge, so we will try again with Elephant tomorrow to find out the details. Hopefully if we pay it might not affect future insurance. Bloody kids eh? thanks everyone for your replies0

If the policy is in her name, this "confusion" over someone else not paying is not helping.
Her policy, her contract = her debt.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -
If the policy is in her name it's unlikely that he could have cancelled it.All your base are belong to us.0

But they didnt send her any documents, so we dont have a policy number to ask Elephant about it (I already tried).
If the policy was/is in her name, surely they would deal with her as the policy holder (not you or anyone else) and a 'phone call from her along the lines of "I don't have the policy to hand but this is my name & address and the REG number make etc. please tell me the status of the policy" ought to get results, hopefully "You are NOT the policy holder- go away")
Insurance companies can't deal with anyone except the policy holder (or their official representative in the case of death or other circumstance)I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)
