If you think it might be a problem you could use an N&P current account to withdraw money from cash machines.

    That looks interesting, thanks.

EDIT : you can't apply from an overseas IP address though.:(

N&P won't open for non-UK residents and will close existing accounts should become aware the holder is non-resident.

Most other issuers will allow non-residents to retain their existing accounts but not open further accounts.

    No, its a monthly limit.
Even call centre staff weren't sure of this, but I recently tried it out.
Paying it off makes NO difference, you can only draw out in cash 50% of your credit limit within a one month period.
I know this as I recently wanted a large amount of cash in euros.
After several days of 500 pounds a day I ran into the 50% limit, which I hadn't been aware of. There was no way round this, even if I paid off the entire balance.

(Only other way round it would be an increased credit limit.)

I disagree. I used mine in Ibiza in June. I withdrew 600 Euro and paid it off immediately. I withdrew another 500 Euro a few days later and again paid it off right away. My credit limit was £1200 at the time so a cash limit of £600. I did check this with the call centre staff before going away and they confirmed that if it's paid back the "limit" resets.

If you use a smartphone you may find the Revolut prepaid MasterCard useful. No need for a UK address. Load and exchange between (at interbank rates) GBP/EUR/USD, withdraw to bank account or cash at ATM, purchase, send, etc, no fees at all worldwide (for the first year at least).
    Evolution, not revolution

That is weird; it definitely didn't work that way for me.

Thanks for the thought but I don't use a smartphone.
I've just got a prepaid WeSwap card; no fees to draw cash (so long as over 200pounds) but there is a 1% exchange fee.

First time I've come across it being based on where you actually are at time of application though. Other providers simply say you have to be UK-resident.
(I am UK-resident, ie I have a UK address and pay UK tax. I spend a lot of time abroad, and have applied for current accounts, credit cards etc from abroad with no problem up until now.)

They upgraded their T&Cs to explicitly state they would close accounts of people who became non-resident.

I guess, like Nationwide found out, that free overseas ATM access is expensive on an ongoing basis as apposed to people on holiday or business trips
