Always worth asking a local carpet fitter for cost of underlay, gripper rods etc 'cos they're usually much cheaper than any shop!
I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!
  • Screwfix is a good shout for underlay
  • I just had a new carpet from allied carpets and they resused the underlay and gripper rods to save on money. I had gone in and said that I just wanted a cheap a carpet as poss to sell house, it was the shop who suggested reusing the existing ones.

Not Leicester but in Newport area in South Wales have used MG Carpets before. Last time I used them (a few years ago now I must admit) carpets were priced per sqm and include fitting/underlay/grippers and usually the carpets were about the same price as Carpet Right although as someone pointed out the same carpet was called something different in each place I compared prices. In my mind it showed all the other stuff Carpet Right charge loads for can't cost much if a fairly local company can include that in the carpet costs.

NEVER trust the big companies discounts - there's generally a local company around somewhere at about the same price and at least you're supporting the local economy and not some bigwig with a massive house and a big office in London! You'll just support someone with a massive house where you live :-) (last smiley may not be applicable to those living in London - maybe I should have chosen some city abroad :-) )

Hi jiji - the carpet warehouse in Leicester is Potters carpets on Abbey lane, however, a good independant carpet retailer is Colourbank carpets on Cavendish road in Leicester.
About three years ago last time I looked you could buy a 150 meter box of gripper rods from B and Q for £20. At colourbank they used to sell an underlay made by Ball and Young called Paris, and that was £44 for a 15 meter bag, works out to £2.94 square meter. It is certainly of the grade of the Carpetright prima/touch of class underlays which are £7.99 plus per square meter.
    Hope this helps!

Potters is in fact in Anstey.
Colourbank on Cavendish Rd are ok.
Red Carpets on Wilson Rd Sth Wigston are ok
Eric Wrights Frederick St Sth Wigston are ok

In fact theres loads of warehouse places in Leicester. Best bet is a remnant as they all sell them cheap, but they also all buy discontinued lines and rolls. Be prepared to haggle though to get the best price......

Sorry Startrekker, you are correct about Potters, slapped wrist for me!
I used to work for carpetright and can tell you what a con they are. However, there are some salespeople who flit company to comapny and cause so many problems for the customer they should be sacked, however they are kept on because there figures are so good. If you want to know who to avoid, PM me.
One place to avoid is United Carpets in Leicester. Not saying they are bad but they should all wear spurs and ride horses......

    No problem robbond55!!!!!

I hate the Carpetright sales...The twist pile at £65 sq mtr now only £10 sq mtr. Give us a break...They must think we are stupid!!! Well some people are, thats why people shop there. Same goes for Allied Carpets.. This price establishing that makes them legally give the impression that you are getting a bargain is to be outlawed in the future I heard.

Anyone really looking for a good deal should.

    1. Find the carpet/floor that they really want.
    2. Measure the area of floooring that you need.
    3. Ring every shop in town to get the best fitted price.
    4. After getting the best price, haggle on the deal.
