Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place but thought it would be helpful to some people.
I am in the process of carpeting my house and got a quote for underlay, gripper rods and carpet from carpet right. After checking online I was amazed to see the mark up that carpet right have on underlay and gripper rods. For example the underlay that carpert right and other carpet stores sell for £8.99 m2 you can have delivered direct to your door for £2.87 m2. So for example if you were needing 100 m2 carpet right would charge you £899. Buying the equvilant underlay on line can cost as little as £287 delivered saving you over £600:eek: .
The gripper rods that carpet right charge £1.99 for each (approx 1.5 meter length) would cost you approx £200 for 150 meters. Buying online including delivery for the exact same amount costs just £24.50. Saving you about £175
I couldn't believe the remarkable markup that some carpet companies are making and just thought I would post this info. in the hope that it will help some others to save money.
I am not affilated to any companies but if you put "underlay" into Google then you will find several companies. The above examples are based on prices from www.carpetunderlayworld.co.uk.
Hope this helps.

In my experience most carpet stores tend to offer the same carpet but under a different name so as to prevent you comparing prices. Allied carpets have a price match promise which states that if you find the same carpet elsewhere then they will match it and reduce it by 10%. The carpet I was looking at was "reduced" in carpet right at 13.99 m2. Allied have it for 14.99 m2. The manager of Allied said he would sell it to me for 13.99 - 10%.
Get a quote on the carpet you want and in my experience most shops will be able to discount it by at least 10% if you push hard enough and say that you are ready to buyRicardo0 -
How do you make a Mexican carpet fitter go faster??
Shout "UNDERLAY UNDERLAY"
sorry!Happiness is wanting what you have, not having what you want.

Good to see people are shopping around and realising that Carpetright's constant sales and promotions are absolute rubbish.
Carpetright? More like Carpetwrong ...Gone ... or have I?0 -
I work for a furniture company and there's the same huge markup on everything, always shop around, look online and haggle before you buy ANYTHING. In any shop, big or small, a £1500 living room suite costs £400-500 to buy in, £500 tables cost £200 and chests of drawers cost as much as the chipboard they are made of.0

I think theres a carpet warehouse type place somewhere in Leicester but I can't remember where.0

Ive used http://www.tradepriced.co.uk/ several times. I too got quotes from Carpetright and then compared the cost for Underlay and Grippers with these guys. Saved Hundreds. Carpetright didnt like it and in fact will then most possibly charge you an extra fee to fit someone else's underlay and grippers but you will still be quids in. I bought underlay at £3.49 sq/m which Carpetright charged £8.99 sq/m for!0

Now come on, how an earth am I supposed to make a living with all this info Kev, I'll be in York this weekend so may need to come round and remove your keyboard :rotfl: :rotfl:
Seriously tho, Carpet right are a rip-off, never have and never will work for them !!
Wish i could get away with their prices. My favourite with customers is when I quote them on say, £15 sq mtr for carpet, when they ask for free fitting my answer is carpet fitters do not work for FREE !! and if the want free fitting the carpet is £18 sq mtr0
