Laptop Battery Life

Modern lithium-ion batteries are much less sensitive to needing to be fully charged and discharged each time, but leaving the laptop plugged in all the time isn't ideal.
Some laptops work with the battery removed. If so, you'll find it lasts longest if you charge it to about 30% capacity and store it in an airtight bag in a refrigerator. If the charge drops really low, you won't be able to re-charge it, so it might be worth getting it out the fridge, leaving it to warm up for several hours, then topping up the charge every six months or so.
Otherwise, if you want to leave it plugged in to the mains, it's worth running down the battery and charging it back up every few days/weeks depending how much you use it.0 -
Most, if not all laptops will run with out a battery if plugged into the mains.
2-4 hours for a standard CPU vaio is pretty normal with a new battery, only the ones with the Intel u CPUs offered better battery life for vaios.
If it's old you may only get 1 hour of intensive use out of them,
or they completely die. My 10 year old vaios worn out 2 batteries. And my 5-6 year old Acer lasts about 1 hour or iplayer usage.
If it is a SVE1512W1ESI it does have reasonably impressive spec including a HD 7650M GPU, so I'm not at all surprised by the 2-3 hours usage.
If you are using it mainly as a desktop replacement you can remove the battery (make sure it's charged first) and keep it safe. Run it it down say at least once every 3 months and it will have a good life span, but remember to recharge it before removing it again.0 -
surely this thread is a wind-up ??......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Why do you say that?0

Thanks. I think that is the model, from what i've seen from asking on the Sony community. however that model lists 4 gb Ram, while this one has 8 so it's definitely been upgraded. I've no idea how much battery Ram uses. It's a nice machine, but it completely throws me that "modern tech" doesn't have a decent battery.
I'm not used to these devices. I've had a desktop for years, but it would give Stonehenge a run for its money in terms of age. The only other mobile device i have is a tablet (which holds more charge ironically). I don't use smartphones etc so the whole 'battery culture' is lsot on me. When i was a kid laptops didn't exist! 0 -

Enable battery care function and run it on mains. I have a similar function on my 4 year old Samsung, run predominately on mains with the battery in and battery wear is 12%.0

...just a feeling I get from some of your questions....
If you have something to say then come on out and say it. As I explained, i am not an expert in the hardware. I can use a pc no problem, but i have never studied nor learned how the hardware works. If a machine says it has xyz specs then it means very little to me, and so a battery that lasts 2 1/2 hours seems almost counter-intuitive. Is that a problem, or are you always this paranoid?

I don't know how to do that. I don't have any VAIO/Sony control centre programme (or similar) that I can find on the hard drive. There is a button marked 'Vaio' next to the on button but pressing it doesn't do anything. Perhaps there was something but the previous owner/shop/whomever removed it?0 -

ok... getting 2.5 hrs out of ANY laptop is good going, depending on useage, settings, etc. Getting 2.5 hours out of the battery on a reconditioned/2nd-hand lappy is pretty bl00dy good tbh.
I couldn't understand why, in your earlier posts, why you considered this performance to be suspect in any way...your admittance of not being up on hardware in later posts gives your earlier questions some credibility. But, without that later clarification, it did seem like a wind-up thread (we've had several on here recently), so sorry if I jumped the gun a bit.
Just for info, and to summarise some of the earlier posts:-
1. laptops were never designed to be run off battery permanently.
2. all laptops should run without the battery fitted and plugs into the mains
3. don't always run from mains power with the battery fitted, it could shorten battery life......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
