Thanks again for the advice and supporting comments. Seems we all agree about Agencies!!

I might try the direct approach with a few companies see where that gets me.

I worked for myself since leaving school , and had enough 4 years ago , and shut up shop ( I should point out I did not owe anyone when I finished ),
I planned over 20 months but it did not give enough time to get the finances just right ,
I am fortunate that I have no mortgage , But I do not have the money that I used to have ,
Am I happy ? I am content and life is good
I would , if in your situation would work to a time table , as you have the OU and the Loan time of 32-36 months work on that
IF you can get another job in the meantime fair enough,
This might not count for much but write a letter stating that you don't want to be involved in the Office Politics and associated rubbish , and you want it ceased , Then If you "through in the towel" you have at least a defence

Thanks for the advice Bob, I know the best thing to do is wait for the loan to finish, hopefully I'll have an OU degree at around the same time and then take it from there.
It's just at the moment 3 years seems like a long time!!
But I'll try to remain positive and hope that another Job comes along during that period....it's tough though.
Why do we always find out that we don't like what we are doing when it's too late (or extremely difficult) to change it
It's my own bed, guess I better get used to lying in it a while longer....

    Thanks again,

If I were in your position I'd probably change mortgages if possible to a flexible one and get rid some or all of the loan at the same time. I work in IT too and things were becoming sticky so I changed to a one account knowing that if I had to leave then there wasn't quite the urgency to find another job instantly. It takes the pressure off if you don't have to work. It reduces the stress substantially as you know you can leave so it actually becomes much easier to be able to stay. The one account usually lend up to 4x income so as long as you have enough wiggle room to meet your outgoings for a while you should be ok. This is only a last resort when all else fails. You will need self discipline to do this as it is tempting to look at the 'cash' available figure and spend it rather than looking at the amount owing figure.

I'd also post your SOA here so people can suggest ways of cutting back if you do have to jump ship.

Check out your companies policies and procedures. There should be a way of at least raising these issues with your line manager. It is highly possible other people are hacked off with the way things are. Strength in numbers and all that.

Also spend some time day dreaming about the kind of job you do want. Somehow this helps :-)

    Thanks for the reply Storm.

(and my current employment contract expressly forbids working either for yourself or for anyone else in any capacity and I certainly couldn't afford to have no income coming in)

You may find that clause is generally regarded as an unfair restriction, and if necessary they may not be able to hold you to it for anything more than 12m, if at all. In effect they are saying that because you've worked for them, you cannot have another job in the same field in which you have worked for 13 years - and if that isn't unfair, I don't know what is!

Put your CV online - my DF had his online for a fw months over 18m ago, and still gets calls from agencies even though he's been in his new job for 16m now! Try Monster or any IT agency webpages....you never know what's in the future! :D

Ah not just me then :) I've got 2 weeks left in this job - privately owned company here too and certainly NO idea of looking after the employees... So I'm off. I would possibly have stayed if they had offered me a different job (depending) but the one they offered me was an abselute mickey take! "Oh we're doing you a favour" right... sure they are... giving me 1 month extra emplyment (2 month contract), slight salary increase, 2 hours travel minimum a day! and one of our most difficult clients... thanks... but no thanks.
So in 2 weeks I'll be unemployed and taking whatever jobs I can to keep us going - OH earns pretty well thankfully and we can afford for me not to work for a couple of months if worst comes to the worst.
I'm just so tired of the lack of care from the senior management in anyone who actually earns them money, the total disregard for staff if we don't scream - and I'm management! Oh and being under paid ;)
So I can understand exactly where you are coming from. I just had to walk away though because I would have seriously injured someone if I didn't know I had a "last day" date to look forward to... ahhh peace and tranquillity!

That's the one ;). If I hear one more time that "This is not a Democracy" and having most, if not all, of my decisions ignored or dismissed due to some mysterious "Hidden Agenda" that the MD has and no-one else could possibly understand I swear that someone is going to pay!!!!

Some good advice there from teabelly and floss too, Thanks.

LOL actually I'm the first one to bring up the "it's not a democracy" when my staff are unreasonable... But I usually always tell them why something has been turned down by further up. If they haven't given me a reason then I will say I haven't been given a reason. If people don't like it then fine, but it really isn't a democracy- the people who make the decision are the ones who own the company and there for it's their right to make that decision - no matter how wrong I think it is. I have one way of demonstrating my views... and I've done it - I handed them my notice :rotfl:

Just wanted to point out that (for once!) I disagree with Dithering Dad! Companies can and do put clauses into contracts about not working for other companies or yourself that would cause a conflict of interest. Therefore, you couldn't set yourself up a side business offering the same service as you'd probably be going for the same jobs, nor take a 2nd job that would affect your ability to perform your main job (i.e. working all night so you're falling asleep and making mistakes!)

However - they can't stop you taking a 2nd job that's completely different - i.e. bar work a couple of nights for extra money as this wouldn't impact on the company.

I've also heard of legal terms on contracts forbidding you doing the same job within a certain radius - this is purely to stop clients following you.

However, I would check your contract & get legal advice if you're in any doubt, simply because you don't want to store up trouble!
