Just wanted to point out that (for once!) I disagree with Dithering Dad! Companies can and do put clauses into contracts about not working for other companies or yourself that would cause a conflict of interest. Therefore, you couldn't set yourself up a side business offering the same service as you'd probably be going for the same jobs, nor take a 2nd job that would affect your ability to perform your main job (i.e. working all night so you're falling asleep and making mistakes!)
However - they can't stop you taking a 2nd job that's completely different - i.e. bar work a couple of nights for extra money as this wouldn't impact on the company.
I've also heard of legal terms on contracts forbidding you doing the same job within a certain radius - this is purely to stop clients following you.
However, I would check your contract & get legal advice if you're in any doubt, simply because you don't want to store up trouble!
Unfortunately due to the working time regulations .A company may be allowed to stop you working if ,for example, by working behind a bar on a saturday and sunday would cause you to go over the allowed 48 hours.... .They could always allow you to sign a waiver ....They may chose not to do this as a way of stopping you doing alternative work.
Very interesting thread ...
I would keep your head down and try and see the handling of this office politics as your next project .If you can learn to deal with this stuff and even use it to your advantage .....Now thats a skill that could be immediatley transfered to any new workplace ....You have to start people watching ...you will soon see a few people who create this kind of environment ...It is what they thrive on ..Within any group of people there will be a cetain ammount of politics .0 -
Hi Morbius
Know exactly what you mean, my job was hell pretty much from the moment I started, and I've spent the last year or so looking for another one. (Handing my notice in tomorrow!!)
I'll be the unpopular one and stick up for the agencies a bit though. They'll mess you around if you let them, but sign on to all of them and one of them will find you something. Don't worry about offending an agency by turning down a job you don't want, there isn't a recruitment consultant alive who won't put you forward for a job if he thinks there's a possible placement in it for him.
post your cv online as much as you can, totaljobs.com is pretty good, and you can specify whereabouts you're willing to travel or relocate, so agencies from that area will contact you.
Also, having been in the same job for so long, you're probably a bit out of practice, interview-wise, so going to a few interviews might not be the worst thing in the world for you to do.
Remember, throw enough sh*t at the wall, and some of it will stick!0 -
Thanks for the replies everyone.
I have registered with about 10 different agencies and they have rang me on a few occasions saying they've got the perfect position for me. So far I have given them the go ahead every time to put me forward (I figured it would be good interview experience if nothing else). As of yet I have not managed to get a single interview or had a reply back from any agency. I have had my C.V. checked 3 times now by different agencies, even travelling the 40 miles to Cambridge to have a face to face with one of them. I have taken their advice and rewritten my C.V and all the agencies seem to think it's fine.
Would be helpful if I could get some feedback from the Agencies or companies involved but that is proving to be elusive!!
I will keep looking and applying though. I have worked out a minimum salary of around 13k a year less than I am currently on but it is still proving to be very hard to find relevant positions.
Relocating is not an immediate possibility as I only bought a house 2 years ago and my partner is in a job she very much enjoys.
But again, thanks for all the advice it is very useful indeed.I say what I like, I like what I say!0 -
Hi Morbius, this might be a shot in the dark and I'm posting the link because you wrote that you're finding it difficult to cope.
The site contains a course of diy cognitive behaviour coaching, which could give you tips on how to manage your current situation more easily. Hope this helps, if you check it out and it doesn't feel appropriate it won't have cost you anything but 10 minutes of your time. Best wishes

....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
one other thing I forgot to add, I have quite a few friends who work for recruitment agencies, and they all agree that if they have ten people with similiar skills and experience, the one they'll find a job for is the one that keeps hassling them. For no other reason that they want to find you a job to get rid of you!0
