And also a problem last year that caused Windows 8 users to have a flashing desktop they couldn't do anything with. Norton's actually a reasonable product, but it does have too many accidental breaking-other-things for my liking.

Currently, I'm having a go with 360 Total Security from Chinese company Qihoo: http://www.360totalsecurity.com/

The essential (free) version has tested very well, and hasn't negatively impacted on my laptop's performance. It also, uniquely, I believe, uses multiple antivirus engines: it's own cloud scan and QVM ones, as well as Avira and Bitdefender's. So I'd recommend giving it a try.
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

So many people are paranoid about what AV software they use but will quite happily run around the internet with full admin privileges instead of running as a standard user. It's less convenient but mitigates a lot of attacks:

Just Google "norton internet security crash problem issue" you'll get plenty of hits.

That's reminded me. I'd rather forgotten that pretty recently I came up against that one affecting my computer:(

In that case I guess its the best-rated freebie and a manual scan put in my diary to do at intervals.

I don't think I'm with any firm that would give it to me as a freebie. My "bank" gives rather different types of perks and I don't have an online account anyway (the reason - I would guess - why banks do this).
