Yeah loads do, in all the surrounding back to backs and through terraces round here the meters are in the living room or basement.
The semis/detached have them outside however. But there are way more terraces than semis/detached

my gas meter is in my front room enclosed in a cupboard.


Although if a G4S guy asked me to read the meter I'd be inclined to say well hold on a second my room is untidy I'd like to clean it up first if you wait 10 mins on the door step i'll let you in when I'm finished.


then close the door and ring 101 and report a suspicious guy from G4S imitating a gas meter reader as I'm with SSE and if you come quick enough he still on my door step as I asked him to wait 10 mins while I clean my front room.


Then I would simply wait till police arrive to see the look on his face!.

Although humorous would that not be a waste of everyone's time? I don't think it's illegal for G4S to read your meter? It's also optimistic to think the police would turn up in ten minutes after calling 101. I think he would have to wait for around 2/3 days before they rock up!

Who reads the meters on behalf of SSE, I thought it used to be G4S, has it changed?

G4S has never read my meter in the 11yrs ive been in my home, Its always been a SSE (swalec) meter reading services.
