Broadband cancellation fees?

Options
Quick question on cancellation fees.

We've been with sky for everything for a while now, we moved to a new house in August, so the contract renewed.

However we've gone from a fiber area to a non-fiber area. On a good day (if the connection stays up) we get about 2mb. I've had no end of trouble with the line and internet since we moved in, Openreach have installed a new one so I can only presume it's an exchange problem.

Long story short, we're not on the roll out for fiber we're currently "under review" it's been like that for the village since we moved in.

Today I received info from a company called wessexinternet.com who can provide upto 50mb/s via a wireless signal. Which solves the problem of waiting for the fiber to be installed. Although at £35 per month it's not cheap, but would solve all our problems.

However, where do I stand with sky? Can I get out of early cancellation fees as I need a faster service that they can't provide, or will I have to pay up?

Paying for 2 broadband services could work out very pricey!

It's not Sky's fault you only get 2Mb, so it's unlikely that they would waive the contract.

No, because you knew that FTTC was not available and that you would be on a much slower ADSL service. Speed is not guaranteed, and the speed you get is dependent on whatever the line will support.
You won't be paying for 2 providers on an ongoing basis. Once you cancel Sky then the full ETC will become due on your final bill.

  • A lessen learned, I guess. If having good, fast BB is important to you, it really should be on 'the things to check out' list when looking for a new home.

I don't suppose wessex internet will provide the phone service. I'm not familiar with Sky's tariffs, but if you go with the wi-fi answer, do your best to downgrade the Sky package to the bare minimum, i.e. line rental plus calls, until you finish the minimum period, then maybe you can switch to a phone only service from BT, or cease the service if you don't need a phone line at all.

Bear in mind that the entry level package is capped at a fairly miserly 20GB per month. And you'll only get 50MBps with a perfect line of sight to the base station.

ie Note the get out phrase, 'up to', in the description.
