  • To make at home its around 30p after an outlay of around £100 if you DIY a brew tank up and get the oil cheap and chemicals in bulk.
    .

I must be missing a trick here - where can you buy veg oil 'cheap' to make the finished product 30p per lt (in quantities that make it worthwhile to do so ) ?

No takers on the source of cheap veg oil ?

It may be of interest to the veg oil people that the market for veg oil is firming up even further at the moment.
I was in the company of someone who was telling me that veg oil will be between 10&20% dearer by March 2008 (depending on how well you are currently buyiing it) than the current price.

After watching Top Gear I would be wary about using anything but diesel to a British Standard in a diesel car. They used official biodiesel, but it had too much methanol and wrecked the fuel pump seals - 6 hours labour plus parts on a BMW.

Proper, standards-compliant, biodiesel has virtually all the methanol removed; indeed, from what I read, recovering it is key to faster dumping of glycerol water soap and other impurities

    Absolutely correct.

It would say that, but then biodiesel is different to veggie oil as its been modified to make it thinner like diesel.

My handbook says nothing about biodiesel use. However that doesnt mean it cannot run it!

If anyone seriously considers using veg oil in there car, the best place is enthusiast forums for your type of car.

I've happily done 7000 miles in the past 4 months using a mixture of vegetable oil, diesel and small amounts of petrol in colder weather. Car runs better than ever!

You need to realise that you can only do this if you know what is going on. It is not worth it on somebodys advice. you need to know everything about your car b4 you take the risk.

Well i know what i'm doing others may not be so mechanically minded. My engine is perfectly suited to SVO use being an IDI type and can run up to 100% in warm weather.

Before i did it, i took advice from people that had the same car and covered lots of miles, investigated the use of the vegetable oil in diesel engines and came to my own conclusion.

You will not be able to take advantage of SVO if you car is a modern type common rail or DI engine (this has already been mentioned), you *may* however be able to use biodiesel in small amounts or up to 100%, but you must dealve further and this forum isnt the place for finding out that sort of information. There is plenty of info on the web if you look.
