Fortunately I was able to time the markets !!!!

    (tongue firmly in cheek...!!)

My own choice of S&S ISA

    1. 7th April 2014
    2. 50% Vanguard LS 100 and 50% Vanguard LS 80
    3. £5760 (started dripfeeding £50/month last month as well....)
    4. Up 17.41%

    and for OH
    1. 4th April 2013
    2. 100% Vanguard LS 100
    3. £5640
    4. Up 22.4%

As discussed elsewhere, much higher risk S & S ISA invested heavily in gold and nat resources recommended by my IFA about 6 years ago, is currently down circa 10% on £5350

I'm just curious about people who've entered into an S&S ISA and wanted to ask if some of you wouldn't mind divulging your returns and how the experience has been for you so far.

    1) When did you start your S&S ISA?
    2) What did you invest in? (Don't have to answer if you don't want to)
    3) How much do you invest per year?
    4) How much profit have you made in total?

So for example you could say

    1) 2012
    2) Vanguard LifeStrategy / Prefer not to say
    3) The maximum
    4) I've invested £40,000 and now my ISA is worth £48,000 so £8,000 profit

Sorry if this seems either stupid or personal but I really just want to see real life examples of what people have made or what people lost. It's hard to find honest answers to these questions.[/QUOTE

    Hi,

    2) VLS80.....Plan to add a Property tracker and Small cap tracker.
    3) £50 per month lol! This will be increased to £400 per month when we pay our mortgage off in November :T
    4) Lump sum £450 total invested £1000. Currently at £1144

    1) When did you start your S&S ISA?
    1995

    2) What did you invest in?
Some individual shares - Unilever, Billiton, Sky, Reckitt - mainly for income - also several investment trusts - City of London, Edinburgh, Finsbury Growth etc. and finally, several low cost Vanguard trackers - All World High Yield ETF and UK Equity Income fund

    3) How much do you invest per year?
Max if possible but now retired so maybe less from now on

    4) How much profit have you made in total?
    Very mixed - some good years, 1998 22.4%, 1999 21.7%, 2009 41.5%, 2012 16.5% and obviously some poor years, 2002 -24.3%, 2008 -32.4% Annualised average over past 20 yrs is 7.3% including dividends.

Sometimes it can be very difficult as a small investor losing a third of your investment in a single year like 2008, but if you can keep the faith the markets always seem to bounce back - like 2010 - and over the longer term equities should provide a better return than cash or bonds.

The crucial aspect is to keep costs low which is why I think the likes of Vanguard trackers are a great strategy for new investors.
  • Thanks for all your replies :)

Again this is purely just to see the general success / failure of S&S ISA and is not meant to be treated as a guide to what to invest in.

    Keep them coming :D

Good topic and interesting to see the different approsches. Some of the following is guesswork as it relies on a poor memory

1.1995 -missed the occasional year up to 2000

2.Bit of a mish mash originally. Then a portfolio of globally diversified managed funds.De-risked a couple of years ago as will be drawing down capital and income in retirement.Current mix is 70% in S&S funds,15% absolute return,10% fixed interest and 5% cash ( most of which is waiting for a buying opportunity)

3..Full annual allowance since 2000 ,pound cost averaging since 2003

4.Circa 50% on total amount invested, all income reinvested

I have always been deliberately overweight in Asia and have around 22.5% in Asia, including Japan.
