Tyres cracking
I just noticed the Original Continental Tyres are cracking on our Peugeot 107.
There's around 5mm of tread left and I was going to put them on the front but then I saw the cracks. Is it safer to just replace them?
They are 3 years old and have done just over 40k plus the car recently passed it's MOT. Also they have never been over inflated.
Here's a photo;

Thanks

Are you sure they are 3 years old? Check the date code on the sidewall of the tyre.
I wouldnt expect a 3 year old tyre to crack like that even id parked up in the sun and rarely used.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I agree - check the date code.0

Continentals are well known for cracking (76,000 hits on Continental Tyres cracking on google).
I've got the same tread pattern on my car (premium contact 2 ), with the same cracking. My tyres are week 47, 2012.
As long as they hold air, and pass the MOT they will be fine.
If they were dangerously defective, Continental would have been recalling them, or you'd have heard about lots of accidents caused by them on Watchdog.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Must be an optical illusion, they look low enough tread that i wouldn't want them on anyway, at the prices you can get good quality 155/65 x 14's for is it worth worrying about.0

Really? There looks to be a good 3mm tread on that tyre. Photos can be deceiving though...Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
I measured them at just under 5mm but I agree that there looks to be a lot less tread in the photo.
Just checked the date code and its saying week 29 2011. The car was first registered in December 2011.0 -
At that age, personally, I wouldn't worry about them.0

Mine never get as low as 3mm and they're off, mind you my latest set are 12mm deep to start with.
Each to their own, some people are quite happy to run them down to the legal minimum...which IMHO should be 3mm across the whole tread anway.0 -

That's interesting - exactly what tyres are they?0
