Washing machine damaged by bath mat

Could the pump have already been clogged and the bath mat fluff was the final straw? I'm just struggling to imagine a mat of such fluffiness that it could single handily break the machine, unless there was already an underlying problem.

The material I removed from the pump was as good as 100% the same material as the mat was made from. The pump body was completely full up with a solid mass of fluff. I'm waiting to hear back from the shop's customer services.
