Bmw 320d Engine noise?
Hi all
I have bought a BMW E46 320d compact
I bought the car from a mate who has the swirl flaps removed in exchange for blanking plates
While the garage was doing the work they told him that 2 of the fuel injectors were letting fuel back in somehow dont really know
They advised his to get them refurbed so he when ahead with it so just to be clear 2 were refurbed and the other 2 were only cleaned
total cost £700 including the swirl flap job ouch!
When he got the car back he noticed when he revved the car he could hear a ticking noise and in normal driving conditions when he puts his foot down he can hear it
He has tried to get the problem sorted but to no avail and just fobbed him off, he has now lost heart in the car and asked me if I wanted to buy it so I did
I have made a little video in regards to the noise thats the ticking noise and louder under acceleration/load
Please can anyone help I dont want to spend lots on this car to get it right and dont want to get ripped off
we think the injectors have not been refurbed right or something has fallan in but this is only a guess
Advice would be great but only from people who know about bmw or have come across this problem before
here is the link to the video

Are you sure that the refurbed injectors are the original ones - or are they just a random couple of different injectors?
If they are not the original ones then they need coding to the engine so that the engine management system knows exactly the injector parameters.
Injectors have a 6 digit code on them for this purpose.
If fitting different injectors a decent garage would have equipment (and the sense) to code them.0 -
Could well be the injectors making that noise.
If it runs well, gives decent economy and doesn't smoke most people would be none the wiser.
It is certainly possible that the recent work may not have been of a particularly high quality.0 -
As above dodgy injectors can make a ticking noise.
Were the flaps replaced before they failed, or had they already failed or failing?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Hi thanks for yout reply
No the injectors are the original ones 2 were leaking fuel back so they got refurbed and the other 2 just got cleaned the injector number is 0445110131 bosch which are the correct ones so they do not need coding as they went back in after the refurb im wondering weather there is air in the fuel system“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. It went to a injector speclist who tested the injectors (i have a print out) 2 were bad and 2 were okish just needed cleaning up i wonder if the copper washer is sitting flush in the injector port hhmmm“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. The swirl flaps were very good and tight but my mate had heard storys about the swirl flaps failing so decided to get them done as he wanted to keep the car
swirl flaps total cost around £300
2 refurb injectors and other 2 clean £300
£100 for other bits and bobs like injector cleaner etc...
after spending so much money he lost heart in the car and passed it to me to get sorted he said if i manage to sort it he would buy it back lol“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. I would suggest that you register on a BMW forum such as BMWLand (others are available, as they say) where you will find lots of folks who will collectively have experienced just about any and every problem that can be had on a BMW.0

Agree but removing the swirl flaps and replacing them with blanks has other problems such as you lose the low down torque and the car does chuck black some out a fair bit if you floor it“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. Has anybody tried doing a leak of test on a 320d its not hard i may try that and see if any of the injectors are leaking fuel more that 40ml in a minute“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. Done them on other cars. Fairly easy. Just remove the current leakoff pipes and blank them to prevent dirt/air getting into the system.
Then connect up a pipe and container to each injector. Run the engine through the recommended test, Usually something like idle for 3 minutes and then rev to 3000rpm for 30 seconds (sometimes repeated 2 or 3 times).
Sometimes you only need the 3 minute idle to spot the really bad injectors.
40ml in a minute? Is that the rate for those? On the Fords its under 25ml throughout the whole test.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
