Not sure I'm going to explain myself very clearly, so apologies in advance
.
I want to connect my laptop to a monitor but the laptop doesn't have a VGA port. I have a VGA adapter like this (I don't have a Mac but it looks the same) but my laptop doesn't have a mini USB port either.
What is the simplest option to overcome this? Is this what I'm looking for? The connections look to be the right way round - the VGA cable I think is male as it has the sticky out bits which get inserted in the female
, and the USB end would plug into my laptop?
Thanks.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

a lot of sockets look similar to the untrained eye perhaps if you gave more info on the laptop , someone could check the spec out

That's not mini USB it's mini display port
What does your laptop have ?
HDMI, DVI or Display port see here for examples:
If it's HDMI and your monitor only has VGA input then you need a HDMI to VGA adaptor.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
Thanks - glad I asked before ordering!
It's a Dell Inspiron 15 3521.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

this one http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Inspiron-15-3521-0620-Notebook.93924.0.html
that shows a hdmi skt on the side/back0 -

Chances are then it's HDMI, see pics above and note the shape of the socket:
You need a HDMI to VGA converter if that is the case, see here for example:

this is the adaptor I use on an intel "nuc" that only has hdmi output
http://cpc.farnell.com/newlink/nlhdmi-hsv02/adapter-hdmi-vga-with-audio/dp/CS27594
note , it has an audio connector , (3.5 jack from vga skt to your device)
I,m fortunate that CPC is less than a mile from me , so no postage , however there is a minimum of £10 , so perhaps ordering something like an audio cable http://cpc.farnell.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?catalogId=15002&langId=69&storeId=10180&categoryId=700000007508&sort=P_PRICE&st=3.5mm%20audio%20cable&pageSize=25&showResults=true&pf=110342202,110342456
or a packet of fuses , would get you over the £10 mark0 -
There are HDMI and USB ports - but as the HDMI port is never used then this would be best. Thanks very much :T.
Ah, I think you misunderstand, the dedicated HDMI port provides the video out signal for your make of laptop, the USB ports do not emit a video signal on your laptop.
Don't confuse mini USB MHL with standard USB, mini USB MHL is a standard generally reserved for tablets and phones allowing only the need for one port, i.e. port sharing so that usb and video can be sent through the same port.
Hope this makes things clearer for you.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0
