Hair getting knotted all the time, can I stop it?

I have fine, almost child like hair. It constantly gets quite knotted particularly the underneath, but even the top layers are starting to do it now. I do get my hair cut every 6-8 weeks as well.

It's really annoying and I don't know how to stop it happening or even reduce it happening. If anyone can offer some advice it would be grately appreciated.

have you tried the usuals ie braid your hair in 2 loose plaits before you go to bed (keeps the hair away from the nape of your neck where its more likely to knot) and use a tangle teezer.
  • Even though my hair is long it's all layered, so I can't get away with braiding it.

It happens during the day, even if I wear my wollen hat. Obviously it's worse if it's windy.

I do a have a tangle angel brush, I prefer it. Did have a tangle teaser but didn't really like it.

My wifes hair is like that, if she has her hair down at the end of the day it is matted to the back of her neck. She now has a very short layer under her hair which is just long enough to tie up, it isn't as bas but she still gets little dreadlocks.

I have identical hair to this and get this knotting and tangling when it is longer than shoulder length. It drives me up the wall and I brush it gently using a tangle teezer regularly - five or six times a day. I didnt like the angel teezer.

I had a graduated bob cut a few months ago and it is much better as the back of it does not rest on my collar so does not tangle. I very rarely wear hats as they make my hair static and greasy.

  • It's a nightmare isn't it. Mine is longer than shoulder length, but I have a lot of layers to give it some sort of volume. The only time my hair doesn't get tangled is when it's really short, but I don't want to go down that route.

I don't wear hats that much really, mainly when I'm out walking the dog. I can't really stand them on to be honest, but necessary evil unfortunately.

Mine does this normally when I need a trim, I have no idea why trimming an inch or two suddenly improves it to the degree that it does but I've read it's about damage and is normally the precursor to split ends- works for me anyway. Hope you find a solution.
  • I'm getting my hair dyed and trimmed tomorrow, so I'll see what happens.

I suffered with this but since my hair has grown more and it's now halfway down my back it doesn't seem to tangle as much, think it's just the sheer weight of it as its so thick as well! Surprisingly it's easier to look after once it gets really long.
Keeping it well conditioned and moisturised is a great help as its not so flyaway, also sleeping in braids or a loose top bun helps me keep it tangle free and essential in the summer months!

  • Do you use conditioner after you shampoo? Also, do you use any kind of heated appliances, such as straighteners / blow drier? If so, make sure you're applying heat protectant spray to the underside of your hair (as well as the rest).

I also find the underside gets a lot more knotty and damaged then the rest of my hair. I have a feeling it's because this is the part that undergoes the most friction stress from being in constant contact, and being pulled out fairly roughly from under coats / tops / bag straps, etc...
  • My sister used to wash her hair in shampoo and beer. No probs.
