I'm in the same boat, After the branch initially advising there was nothing they can do, they came back and I've been asked to provide proof of employment, address, and an explanation of all transactions so I can appeal.. I'd like to know whether you got anywhere with this...

You should tell them to shove it, and go to another bank.
  • Hi JackLadder,

I've just received the exact same thing. I have accounts at Halfifax and Bank of Scotland and Lloyds (All part of the same group) and received letter notifying me of account closure within the next 60 days.

I got these just this last Friday 26 May 2017, and have already been into the bank where they said they couldn't see what was happening, but that with them I fired off an email to the relevant department (rather the Branch Manager did with me in the room) explaining the way I handle my money. Like you I move money around these relatively regularly. But given they are all under the same bank, I don't see why this shoudl matter.

Hoping against hope that because this thread is still active, that you could give me an understand of what finally happened in your case and any lessons or advice you might have for me on how to proceed to ensure a successful resolution. Or in general what did you do if there wasn't a successful resolution.

    Thanks in advance,
    Thomas

It's not really though, is it? The most recent posting before yours was over a year ago and JackLadder last posted over two years ago (but did log in last year), so don't hold your breath....

It'll quite possibly be because you're rotating money around the banks within the group that they can see what's happening and object to it, although chances are there'll be something else that they don't like.
  • Well the reason for the shuffling is because of their structure.

I set up a Bank of Scotland account when I was at university there, and I have most of my payments and credit card connected to that account.
But now living in London they don't have Bank of Scotland branches here so they require me to have a Halifax account so that I can use the services. Then once the money is in the Halifax account I move it online within the same online banking portal to the Bank of Scotland account so that my payments can continue as normal.

If they're going to close my accounts because of a set up they have created I hardly think that makes any sense.

Apart from that there are no other reasons for closing, unless Sainsbury's, pizza restaurants and a pint or two each week are off limits.

I do realise that the thread is not dynamic, but the fact that this thread is still up and running, gives me hopes that perhaps JackLadder having been through the same process might be able to offer some good insight.

    Thanks for the post though,
    Tom

Fair enough, I was mistakenly assuming you were adopting the common practice of posters on here of shunting money around multiple current accounts being (mis)used as savings accounts solely as a way of earning interest, but if that's not the case then I'd agree that's less reason for them to close accounts.

They might explain what's going on but if I were you I'd crack on with preparing to switch your accounts elsewhere - it's a straightforward process under the Current Account Switching Service and there are a number of providers offering incentives to do so.
  • Agreed, I have already been to another bank to discuss about moving over and while it is rather simple, it is also a humongous unnecessary thing to do, when everything is already set up nicely and has been since early 2000s.

I should hear back from the bank regarding their acceptance or not of my explanation within the next 3-4 working days and will update here what happened. Something I wish JackLadder had done.

I still have over 50 days to sort this out, so will go through some of the processes while the timelines allow without too much risk.

    Thanks again for posting too!

You don't need a Halifax account to use Halifax branches - they will service the BOS account but may put you on the phone for any BOS specific aspects.

For day to day stuff, it will operate like a BOS branch.

Is the reverse true, BOS branches servicing Halifax accounts?
