depends what you want curtains for .... Just dressing the window or to offer some warmth in colder weather and keep light out in summer. If it's the latter then you need to go for good quality, lined curtains.

I don't think your quote is bad actually. We bought lined ready mades for our lounge in January and we paid about £250 and that was half price of what they should have been. We also paid another £30 to a neighbour who shortened 2 of the pairs. That was for a large pair of patio curtains, a pair to fit a window about 6ft wide and a very large pair to fit a window over 12ft wide.

Have you looked on EBay at new ones? I bought 2 very large lined pairs for our bedroom last summer and they're lovely and cost about £100. they were made to measure.

Choose something which won't date and they'll last you for years.

Ebay can be amazing for curtains if you're willing to look at second-hand. I managed to pick up two enormous pairs of fully-lined Sanderson curtains in a William Morris print for less than £50, which included postage. They are in great condition and were a real bargain. I've also picked up a couple of pairs of lined Laura Ashley curtains for less than £20 each, and again they've been in fantastic condition.

 at the cost of curtains! This has confirmed in my mind that I am going to learn how to make them in my new home (my mum made all my current ones)
