Tunisia?

I personally wouldn't go, but I wouldn't have booked in the first place. That said, I think the tourist on the cruise who was killed was incredibly unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. We often cruise, but we actively avoid those with what we consider to be "iffy" ports of call.
I know that is not much comfort but there are so many places in the world that seem safer that I tend to stick to those. Of course, nowhere is completely safe but I don't want to spend my well earned break worrying about terrorists.0 -
In all honesty, I think I'd go on the holiday, but trips outside of the resort would be out of the question. What alarms me is the high number of casualties from one particular cruise ship...a cruise I considered going on as the travel agent rate plummeted to £99 per person. What put me off was reading the FCO advice for the ports of call.
I've been to Tunisia by cruise ship 3 times and am not at all surprised that it was mostly cruise ship passengers caught up. The Bardo Museum is a huge draw, and it isn't unusual for 2-3 different tours to go to the Bardo, or include the Bardo as part of a Tunis trip itinerary. Each of those tours could feasibly have 2-3 coaches leaving.. that's a lot of people from a single ship, hence the large number of casualties from a single ship.
I love Tunisia and feel desperately sad for the families of those involved and ordinary Tunisians. Personally I would go but would be in exactly the same quandry as the OP. I'd also avoid trips to the capital for the moment. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most of us live in UK because we have little choice.
As for choosing a holiday destination there's lots of choice. For that reason I agree 100% with Cyberman 60!0 -

I don't suppose you happen to have a list of all the countries which are free from religious murderers and extremists do you0 -
As has been said, nowhere is free of it. Some countries are more likely to have issues than others.0

Nope. But I could give you quite a long list of countries where, as a tourist I wouldn't be prepared to dip my toes.
Tunisia is next Libya and Algeria. Libya had fallen apart, Algeria has always been a breeding ground for terrorists, and border controls between the 3 countries is practically non existent.
I've visited Tunisia several times pre-Arab Spring, but now the country is all part of the much bigger North Africa and Middle Eastern 'tinder-box, and not worth the risk.0 -
I'm due to go twice this yr to Tunisia, - I havent got a problem with going, yes i'll be more security aware, I'll be avoiding tunis (but then for me thats nothing new).
If it was unsafe - there would be no tourist flights....
I know someone mentioned the IRA, my home town got bombed by the IRA, and yet were 200 miles from London....
xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
Id go.The whole world is under threat from extremists.
You are more likely to experience violence on"The Strip" @ Magaluff or "English Square" @ Benidorm than in Hammamet.0 -
If I'd already booked to go to Yasmine Hammamet or PEK, both purpose built self-contained resorts that only offer a sanitised glimpse of Tunisia, and only intended to loll within the resort for 2 weeks, then I'd go without much hesitation.
But if either I hadn't yet booked, or fully intended to get out and about into the real Tunisia, then I'd have severe reservations, at least until the dust on this latest atrocity has settled.
I sense a tourist hostage/kidnap on the horizon. But hope I'm wrong!0
