You wouldn't have to pay that bill if you'd make the effort to tell us your annual consumption so that we can see what the problem is. No one has said it is a meter fault-it is merely one of the possible problems..
All we know about your usage is that 'the meter readings are high' and that your last bill was '£500'-now apparently £550..No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Yes… I understand. I will make arrangements to have the meter checked…. I guess I will have to try and find the 550 quid to pay the bill first before I am cut off…

Ah! I do have a small electric heater which I leave on overnight in the room where the dogs sleep… Around 8 hours per night, winter time only, though...
A 1kW heater on for 8hours will use 8 units (£1.11 on your tariff).
A 2kW heater (£2.23).
A 3kW heater (£3.34).
At 1kW (presuming 1/3 year heating for winter of 8hours) keeping your dogs warm is about £180.

You may have solved the problem… I didn't realise this would use a lot of power on the lowest setting…:T .....
As Istar337 mentions, this is not the only cause, you're probably looking for between 3&6 times that level of usage before you get anywhere near a 'normal' level of consumption .....
As you've been able to access your online account, have a look for your usage history for the last couple of years and post how much electricity (kWh) you've used between bills for each quarter ... don't worry about the cost, just the amount.
In the meantime, if you can easily do so, go and read the electricity meter right now ... make a note of the date and time against the reading, repeat every couple of hours whilst it's light today and tomorrow (the interval isn't really important if you have the time), then post the readings back on here late tomorrow afternoon for someone to have a look at.
You mention that you're on a remote peninsula with overhead wires and suffer power supply problems - so I take it that it's a pretty rural property ? .... is your meter therefore in an outbuilding, or supplies an outbuilding, or supplies multiple distribution boards ?

The relevant price (13.9p per kWh) looks very high - but you'll have to look on a comparison site with your postcode to see what is available to you. Plenty of tariffs at 10 or 12p per kWh should be available.
But, of course, sorting out where your usage is coming from is the main priority. (Particularly now that you have admitted you could be spending £100 per month keeping your dog warm. What other 'obvious' uses of electricity are you ignoring and blaming on your meter and supplier?)0 -

Reward points are a scheme where customers can earn up to 1500 points a year for having dual fuel or electricity on an eligible tariff. The plan you're on qualifies but you'll need to opt in to receive the points. You can do this online or by phoning us. The points can be exchanged for either Tesco Clubcard points or High Street Shopping Vouchers.Hi Malc… Is it true that the Age UK tariff only applies for duel fuel customers?
As macman says, our AgeUK tariff is available to dual fuel and electricity only customers with credit meters. There's an age restriction, though. Customers need to be aged 60 or over or between 50 and 59 and on our Priority Services Register. To be on this register you need to have told us you're of pensionable age, disabled, chronically ill, blind or partially sighted and/or deaf or hearing impaired.

Don't forget about asking for a payment arrangement as I suggested in my post yesterday. We'll be happy to look at spreading the balance over a more manageable period.

As Nada666 says, don't worry about this figure. It's the Tariff Comparison Rate (TCR). It's to help compare different tariffs across the energy market. All suppliers have to work it out the same way. It's based on how you pay, the standing charge and unit rate plus discounts/VAT. It should only be used as a guide as it's based on Ofgem's average usage figures and not your own actual consumption.
The relevant figures for your account are the unit rate at 13.913p per kWh and the standing charge at 26.019p per day. To see how competitive these prices are, pop your annual usage in kWh on to the independent comparison sites. This will list all your options both with us and with the other suppliers.
You can find the annual usage by logging into your online account and choosing 'MiData' from the left hand menu. Hit view to see the annual usage.

Hmm… I have looked at my account online but it doesn't say what my annual consumption is… Although there is a very scary comparison graph which seems to indicate my usage as being virtually off the scale!!0

It's call MiData and it is under the 'Your Account' tab on the left hand side of the screen - 4th box up from the bottom of the list. The information is only relevant if you have been with E.oN for at least twelve months. I agree that E.oN has one of the most confusing - and slow - online - websites going.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Then simply call your supplier and ask for the figure: they are obliged to give it to you.
Or do as Nada suggested: all you need are the two readings approx 1 year apart-it doesn't have to be exactly 365 days. You can then pro-rata.
