Eclipse - what a complete let down

Vent part:
I do wish the BBC would be a little more careful when they hype these things, as the forecast was very cloudy, and they should have known that a vast swathe of the population in the South would not notice anything particularly different to a period with very thick cloud.
Did you listen to the full story or just the headlines? because both local and regional news specifically mentioned the cloud and spoke about the probability of it being visible in different areas.
Also, the visibility can be very localised. Where I am, it was not visible at all due to heavy cloud cover, but 6 miles down the road the cloud was patchy and people got a good view, and 10 miles in the opposite direction it was apparently very clear.
I don't think it is reasonable to expect the BBC, or anyone else, to be able to predict with that level of detail what may be visible,.
And surely most people can work out for themselves that you can't see the sun when it is very overcast. It isn't the kind of thing you would expect people to need to be told. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
The UK cloud cover for the time of the eclipse was forecast in every BBC weather bulletin I saw on Thursday. What more do you want?0
-
How would you feel if they were cautious, saying that most of the south will be covered in cloud, and then it turned out to be a blue sky morning (as happened here in Edinburgh - I wasn't expecting to see anything because of the forecast but had a magnificent clear view).0

It isn't the eclipse you should be angry about. That happened exactly as expected.
It's the clouds that infuriate. Bast**ds!!!!!0 -
Don't you worry, next eclipse on 10th of June 2021.0

Unless you're lucky and well prepared and well kitted out, with a good spot and sandwiches lined up ... cameras, tripods, videos, solar filters, time alarms set ....and good weather .... most of the time the event is a non-event - and even if you're "lucky" you probably miss it most of the time as it's over so quick.0

Waste of time going out and spending £1 on these glasses. I wonder how much i'd get back if i put them on Ebay.
A co-worker bought it on ebay for £10:eek:. He was wondering if he could return it claiming it was defect. His claim would be that he couldn't see the sun through them.
Not that he would have seen anything without them :rotfl: The sky was pretty grey from thick clouds. Well it is nice and sunny now.SPC 08 - #452 - £415

Next one is August 2026 (for the UK)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-31965456Prof Giles Harrison explained: "This is the first big partial eclipse to happen in the UK since 1999, and the next one isn't until August 2026, so this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity......0 -
I got annoyed by the BBC's coverage, they kept cutting to presenters/people talking about how it was getting dark (or not) and doing various voxpops instead of actually showing the eclipse. And why on earth was weather presenter Carol Kirkwood sent to Lewis, when they were covering the "weather impact of the eclipse" with an unknown in Leicester?:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls
