What's the best way to get rid?

I have tried pulling and hoeing, but then the next day it appears in another spot.

Is a spot weed killer the way to go? If so, what one? I only know of those that you can use on paths and that will be no good on the beds.

    TIA

Roundup type weedkiller, I think you are supposed to bash the leaves about a bit first as it helps the weedkiller get into the plant.

The other way is to just keep digging up any piece of root that grows, or one that I have used..... dig the area well, add well rotted manure and remove any pieces of root you find, cover with black plastic and leave for at least a couple of months, when you remove the plastic any surviving roots will be weak and easy to dig up.................. and as a bonus the worms will have dug your manure in for you and you have a bed ready to go :D
Obviously this only works really well in a raised bed.

There are lots of threads on bindweed if you use the search facility on this board and they explain how to get rid it. In short you need to remove as much of the roots as you can and try not to break the roots up otherwise you get more bindweed growing.

The best ways to get rid of bindweed:
    1. Dig out all the roots
    2. Grow it up canes and when there are a lot of leaves spray it with weed killer like roundup. Wait 7-10 days and then dig it up with as much root as possible.
    3. If the area has no plants in it, dig up as much root as possible and cover the area with weed suppressant membrane. Wait 3-6 months and when you remove it you will find the roots have come to the surface then dig them out. Any regrowth remove immediately you see it.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

I bought some stuff that was recommended in the paper by Peter Seabrook. It is supposed to produce some sort of nutrient once the weed has died down that is supposed to be beneficial to surrounding plants. I haven't used it properly yet so can't comment on it. I will let you know the name of it when I get home later as I am currently at work.

I found the paint on stuff is quite good, i use the growing success one. The best time to do it is in the evening, otherwise it just doesn't seem to touch it.

We get a lot of it but only seems to be in one area of the garden so we create a tripod for it to climb up........seems if it has somewhere to climb it stops it spreading across the garden and makes it easier for us to get at it

I think that is the stuff that Peter Seabrook recommended. The name rings a bell.

  • I have a patch of garden about 5 x 5 metres or so. It's massively overgrown with bindweed and plum trees (would like to hang on to some of the plum trees). When I moved in, the garden was in this state. I've tried to clear it a couple of times but the bindwood grows back madly. (There's also lumps of concrete down there that need to be shifted but that's another story).

My question is this: I am taking an old 4 x 4 carpet out of a bedroom. It's in a terrible state and nobody would want it. If I were to put this over the bindweeds etc (grown to about 4 foot high at least!) and leave it there for 6 months or so, would it kill what it covered, making it easier to have another attempt at a garden clearance? Or would I be left with a soggy, smelly, half disintegrated carpet that would be a pain to remove and get rid of?
Anyone tried this or got any theories? Thanks.

I think , I remember  the great Bob Flowerdew talk about carpet and bindweed ( allotments ) You need the hessian backed carpet, the rubber backed one will just make a mess:D

Yep, definitely use hessian backed carpet. I've had one section of garden (waiting to become a patio) covered for 2 years now and the weeds are only just starting to break through it where birds have been pulling at the threads to use for their nests
