vans parking up on yellow and putting cones out?

Noticed BT openreach doing that quite a bit.

Does putting cones around your vehicle somehow do something to prevent getting a ticket?

I know that it's up to the discretion of the warden and you must be observed loading/unloading while on single yellow to not receive a ticket. But openreach are more in the business of client visits rather than deliveries. I do a lot of client visits and wouldn't try pulling off manouvre like that.

Does the cone do something in invalidate a parking ticket? or can be interpreted as a breakdown in the eyes of the law or something??

but they're not doing any roadside work. I can understand if a breakdown driver is changing a tyre on the roadside and putting cones out so cars leave space for them. But the openreach drivers put the cones right nect to the van/ The cone is literally touching the van.

Maybe you should just ask them next time you see them?

It may buy them more time before they're booked. But it doesn't confer any immunity from parking restrictions. If it did, everyone would carry a few cones...
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • You could always tell them to clear off when they're parked near your gaff, maybe as a special favour they'll note which house you live in and do a special permafix on your line.

Really, the lads are working either at the nearest telephone point or under the road, do you expect them to find the nearest commercial car park they can fit under barrier and carry everything they need back to the repair site.

You see the difficulty is that all domestic dwellings and businesses rightfully expect that they should receive essential services such as gas, water ,electric, telecoms and postal deliveries but the people who deliver these services unfortunately do not have diplomatic immunity when it comes to parking restrictions.

So whats going to happen? well if you are expecting one of the above to call on you and there is nowhere within easy reach to park then its quite possible they will simply drive off and not visit.

Why would they do that? Well the person is obeying traffic restrictions and thus ensuring he/she doesnt get a ticket which he/she would have to pay out of wages.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

No they don't have diplomatic immunity :D but many Traffic Regulation Orders do include exemptions from parking restrictions for utilities and the likes of Royal Mail, with many of those exemptions dating back from when the likes of British Telecom were in state ownership.

where do you expect them to park if they are working nearby in a building or on a junction box, they may need constant access to the van for tools etc

Just like the washing machine repair man etc. As C_Mababejive said, if they can't park , they can't do the job. When I was that washing machine repair man that's how it worked, no parking, no repair.
But your internet is much more important!

Can you present any evidence of this? Are such exemptions a matter of public record?
