BT "standard" v "faster"

Options
Here's a senario:

I'm moving house and looking to get broadband. BT are offering me 7mb/s "Standard Broadband" broadband for £13.00/m. Or "Faster Broadband" 6mb/s-11mb/s for £21.00/m.

The very misleading part is that I could potentially get the same or even slower broadband for an extra £8 a month.

The only official answer they've given is "Unlimited Faster Broadband is available in areas where the cabinets have been upgraded for fibre and IS LIKELY to give you faster speeds than standard broadband."

The misleading bit: "is likely". What if I lump for the more expensive in the hope of getting 11mb/s when it only gives me 7mb/s or even worse. Would I be able to claim the difference? How can I check? The figures above are accurate (and vague?!?) and from their own broadband checker website.

Cheers for advice - anyone experienced anything like this? (Virgin isn't an option unfortunately).

You missed the bit UP TO, fttc is more than likely going to offer a faster download speed than standard, but depending on what you do with your internet may not offer you any practical advantage.

Go to this page and click Address Checker near the bottom, input your new house number and postcode. Can you screenshot or paste the results here?

The faster broadband is fibre to the cabinet but from your estimate it looks like you are a long way from the cabinet hence the low speeds.

I would just go with the standard broadband as the benefits of fibre broadband to you are nil and it's cheaper.

Also BT unlimited broadband is available for £8.00 a month here

  • Great link - why is it 5 pound cheaper than it should be?
