Shuddering Mondeo

I have a 2004, diesel, 2.0 Ford Mondeo TDCI

Very occasionally when I start the car it starts to 'shudder' ...a bit like my washing machine on spin! when I turn it off and start the car again, it's fine. Any ideas what may be causing this? Thanks

  • Or it could be a problem with one of the injectors and the engine is only running on three pots.

Does sound like an Injector is going out of tolerance.

Do not put injector cleaner snake oil in this car or you will need 4 new injectors.

Do you depress the clutch when starting and stopping the engine?

If not try starting with the clutch down.

You should do that whenever you start or stop an engine, especially if it is DMF equipped like your Mondeo.

And your evidence for that statement is?

Using Injector cleaner should be part of your routine maintenance.

That pretty much rules out using any of the 'premium' fuel brands then, since they're basically just bog standard brew with the same chemicals found in injector cleaner added and some cetane/octane booster.

And before people ask, I look after big players in the refinery and fuel distribution and storage market, with colleagues who work onsite know their process better than they do themselves.

Weak glowplugs, Although it will start without them. They do help it run smoother from a cold start.

Or fuel/injector issues. Get it tested because you cause further damage.

Does any white smoke, unburnt fuel, come out of the exhaust? Could mean the glowplugs are duff, and the cylinders are cold.

    Thanks all

No smoke etc but I think the answer may have been found here. The glowplug light did come on about 3 weeks ago and I lost some power at the time, but the light has not come on and no power lost since. I'll get it checked out over the weekend.

    Cheers

PS...didn't know that about depressing the clutch either

The glowplug light is a sign of fuelling or turbo problems. It does not mean the glowplugs are faulty.

The light comes on whether the glowplugs work or not. Ones the engine is running the glowplug light is a warning light that you car is in limp mode.

It is written in the owners manual for the Mondeo.

It is something I was taught to do when I was learning to drive.

I did start my old mk3 Mondeo once without depressing the clutch and it shuddered and knocked away like a good un.
