BT Engineer Visit - Sky Fibre Unlimited

Hi All

I have a BT engineer coming out as my fibre speed is higher in the test socket (28.3mb) of the master box than when plugged into the face plate (18.4mb)

Line speed was estimated between 30mb - 38.5mb?

Is there anything I should be asking the engineer to check or do when he comes?

I would expect a charge for this. The fact that the connection is faster in the test socket indicates that the issue is with your internal wiring - something Openreach are not responsible for, and something they often charge customers for.

You'll probably find that because of the internal wiring, the "banded profile" that the line management software has put on your line is somewhere in the region of 15-30 meg.

I would say that if you were to leave the modem plugged into the test socket and the line was stable for 3-5 days, then said banding would most likely be increased which would in turn allow your modem to sync at a speed closer to the estimated line speed.

All that said, there's nothing you can do with 38meg that you can't do with 18meg, aside from download files a little bit quicker. All daily activities such as streaming, web browsing and online gaming can be easily achieved with a speed of around 5meg. People get too hung up on speed these days :)

Engineer called out and fitted a new broadband face plate to the master socket also discovered a fault that was traced back to the exchange box.

Speed has now improved to 31.9mb
