Electriican qualifications/certificates for testing village hall electrics

Dear all, I need to arrange for the electrics at our village hall to be checked for safety. Both PAT testing and fixed. Before I start ringing round can anyone tell me what sort of qualifications or certificates I would expect the electrician to have or supply?

The hall is used by several community groups including children and has water heaters, wall mounted heaters etc so all need checking - as well as the wiring.

Thanks

Liz

A JIB Gold Card would be worthwhile for assessing the actual Electrician there's competence. Given that you mention inspection and testing you are probably looking for someone with "Approved Electrician" grading.

In theory electricians if there original exams included can PAT test but not necessarily and jib gold card certainly doesn’t mean they can not aware they even have a grading for it nearest would be Household Appliances Electrician and that doesn't include pat testing ?I'd look on the part p sites napit, eca, elecsa. etc for those those that list they do both as that sounds like what you’ll need

I was saying for the inspection and testing of the installation.

Furthermore, PAT testing is listed on the back of a JIB card if the qualification has been achieved and the JIB noted (it states "City & Guilds 2377 - Inspection & Testing").

The schemes you have mentioned give absolutely no assurance of the competence of the individual Electrician who turns up (or even whether they are an Electrician). It is simply the Company which is assessed with their Qualifying Supervisor.

See SELECT (Scotland) or NICEIC (UK Wide)

Pat testing etc means its safe when tested not necessarily ten minutes later its about liability passing showing reasonable steps have been taken to ensure safety of appliances etc JIB don’t have a grading for it and what its says on a card could be any grade that’s the exams you’ve passed not your JIB grading you could be JIB Labourer etc with it and to most lay people the C G number would mean nothing ...

JIB is an impartial organisation that sets the standards for employment, welfare, grading and apprentice training in the electrical contracting industry using someone JIB as opposed to Niceic/ eca etc the difference for the consumer is the latter offer a form of protection if you are not happy with the work that is done by an registered contractor and they agree that it is deficient they will help to put it right.

JIB used to mean they have exams. apprenticeships etc it used to be a good sign but not anymore you can simply join eca and get automatic JIBand as anyone knows joining any of the schemes ( part P) is about as hard as eating a grape,,,

JIB won’t rectify the work if it’s wrong…it benefits for contractors, apprentices companies but not necessarily the consumer you seam to be viewing this as someone has worked for companies and maybe set up themselves not as to whats best for consumer...I see your in Ireland maybe there it differs but pretty sure it don't the norm here its Niceic eca etc all day long...

NICEIC (and others) do not assess the competence of Electricians. They merely assess the enterprise (i.e. business/company). Therefore there is no assurance that the person actually carrying out the work is either competent or qualified. A JIB card does not suffer from any of these flaws.

And a JIB card can have a grading and also list the PAT testing qualification on the back. I can tell you this for a fact because I have a JIB Approved Electrician gold card with numerous qualifications listed on the back including both 2391 Inspection and Testing and 2377 Inspection and Testing (i.e. fixed installation and PAT testing).

If you're an ECA member, membership of the JIB is free and automatic so flawed straight away,,,,
And JIB don’t access “competence” only qualifications and the two certainly don’t go hand in hand....

Nonsense. I was talking about JIB grading of operatives - no-one mentioned anything about a firm being a JIB member Company which is a completely different thing. And JIB membership for a Company is not "automatic" for ECA members - it is indeed free but they must still opt-in to the JIB. There are plenty of ECA Companies who are not JIB Companies as they have chosen not to be.
