I've just watched the 90's episode. It's hard to believe that the start of the 90's is now 25 years ago. I did identify with what the husband said about the consumption of wine in this decade. I thought I drank too much wine during the later half but everyone I knew was same, plus I had more disposable income in the late 90's and early 00's compared to now (these days I hardly drink at all). I also worked for a brewery at the time and remember the alcopops like Hooch and Two Dogs taking off. In '99 I remember the Nostradamus doom that hung over part of the year and then the millennium threats to technology that overshadowed the rest of it.

I have enjoyed the series but personally I don't seem to view 90's food as fondly as I did in previous decades in spite of the abundance and more variety/convenience.. I noticed everything seemed to get even faster and to this day I still won't purchase bagged salad unless YS. :)
  • I was rather wondering about them saying that kitchen is 1990s too. Was definitely sitting there thinking "Have I got that wrong? I thought that sort of style came in only a few years ago - and its how my kitchen is going to be when I get my new kitchen and I am pretty up-to-date in the styles I like". Was definitely thinking "<puzzled> - but that's my plain Shaker style and pale wood".

I am now wondering also re the hint at the end about a programme next week about future food trends. That being I got the feeling they are talking about food with fat in being taxed (well...higher-priced or whatever way it was they put it). I was sitting there thinking "But....but....but its been established for the last couple of years certainly that fat ISNT the baddie we were told for a while. They've got that wrong then - as a "fats in food tax" isn't going to happen" - well not unless the Government is way behind the times on latest research anyway...

The kitchen I had in the 1990's was limed oak. It had a pinkish hue to it - you may remember this! That streamlined look only came in - as you rightly said moneyistooshorttomention - about six-ish odd years ago now.

I also spotted the Garden Trading bread bin and that design only came out about handful of years ago, so allot of what they had was fairly modern and up to date.

I know for a fact my kettle was a jug style, white and cordless, but I don't recall seeing Dualit stuff like that.

  • That kitchen was definitely not 90s. It looked newer than the kitchen in a 2004 built apartment I lived in a few years ago.

Also the 80s kitchen units looked far too trendy than the average 80s kitchens that I know are still in use today.

Who are they trying to kid.
  • I do remember limed oak and like the style still.

Must jog back and re-visit the 1980s programme then to study the kitchen. I know exactly what a 1980s style is - as that's when I bought my starter house and that was what I got for it. Will check...

Though some styles do hang around in places quite some years after things have changed. The kitchen in my current house is 1980s style too (very similar indeed to the last one I had) - but it was put in earlier this century by the last owner. Far too "fiddly" style for the amount of housework I expect to do these days:rotfl:

When going back look at their original kitchen - although it is quite nice - the 1990's kitchen is way, way better. Allot more units, more better quality of finish and a big larder unit with the fridge/freezer in it. They only had a stand alone fridge/freezer at the side in their original kitchen. The flooring although laminate is much better as well.

Do you think the programme makers are going to let them keep this current kitchen? I would be asking if I could because it is all so much better.

Also Lee - those wall tiles have only been out for the last couple of years, they are really modern!

Noticed they had put allot of pine furniture in it as well which was correct for the era.

Thought it was mean of Giles Coren to take Fred's dinner though. I know Giles helped cooked it but they under estimated the amount and only served up five instead of six. Fred had to have a bit of hash up of what was left over.

Admits to not having ever liked Giles Coren personally from previous food programmes I've seen him in. I put it down to my personal surprise that he seems to have the gourmet background thing - but hasn't got the manners to match.

Hence I just knew what would happen when I saw that 5 portions were available...and had been expecting that particular little scenario. I'd already laid a bet with myself that Giles would still be sitting down to dinner with the family - despite there not being enough food to go round - and wondered who was going to dip out (but knew it wouldn't be him).

That was a little side-turn nasty note I felt - as I think a lot of us would have been there thinking "Just divide the food up totally equally between everyone - and there wont be a full portion each - and it will be inauthentic, as there will have to be loads of nice bread or a potato dish or something to help pad it out BUT hey....that's how it is" or expecting Giles to "bow out" on his invite to dinner to be nice.

My thoughts on that kitchen is that this is the last programme in the series, that kitchen will remain in their home, they probably had a deal going with the family that they'd leave them with a decent kitchen - does it really matter if it didn't look exactly like a 90s one? It was the food and the attitudes etc that were the important things.

Didn't see the whole series but enjoyed what I did see. I thought the family seemed very genuine.

The doors on the kitchen are quite similar to mine, installed in 2002.

I remember limed furniture from the 90's. Our bedroom furniture, bought in the 90's is limed pine. Shortly after we bought it, our friends came round and wanted to look at how we'd decorated our bedroom. The husband thought we'd spilt talc all over the furniture!:rotfl:

My kitchen units are nearly identical (mine is beech effect rather than light oak), same handles as well and I put mine in in 2004. Still lots of wear in it yet.

Previous kitchen lasted 16 years but that was when the boys were small (finished it two days before DS2 was born) and as things fell apart I swapped them round. By the time I could afford the replacement the sink top was being held up by a cupboard at one end and metal trolley thing at the other. I was coming home from work at 7pm and putting one or two units a night together.

My plumber came to fit the new sink two days before I went in and arranged for his cousin's bf to come and put up the wall cupboards and scribe the back of the worktop where it met the wall. Whilst we were waiting for word from the hospital that they had a bed for me, I re-hung the freshly painted kitchen door and moved all the crockery back through into the new cupboards.

I put the handles on during my recuperation. I was only allowed a few minutes activity at a time and then had to rest so I did one door handle a day. The top cupboards are still waiting for their handles as once I returned to work, things got very busy - needed extra work so applied for a job cleaning a building society. Should have been 2 hours a day x 6 days but because of the state it was in (obviously dirty bits in the public areas and sacks of rubbish hidden in odd corners everywhere)started at 18 hours. A month later I was asked to take on another two.
