New announcement of a "help to buy ISA". Provides a top up of £50 from the treasury for every £200 saved. The Government literally giving people money to meet current house prices . . . . .remarkable. Certainly shows once and fo all that the government are committed to maintaining house prices at almost any cost.

I guess the only thing anyone sensible can do in this environment is position themselves accordingly. Doesn't change teh fact that it stinks though.

There used to be mortgage interest relief many years ago and so its not unusual for government to assist in this sector.

Whether £50 is enough or the solution to the problem is another argument altogether.

The first £1,000 of any interest you earn on your savings or current accounts, will be tax free.

    Again, another big thing!!

"Almost an entire tax free banking system", Government will save money by removing an entire department/function that was managing this tax.

I didn't hear whether this would be immediate or next tax year?

I am a HRT and have my interest paying current accounts. I will either need to pay extra, or get a refund!

Milliband really does need to get a new joke writer.

He's just said he will not take advice on fairness from the Bullingdon Club and a Trust Funded Chancellor.

    Yawn.

    Thanks Jason

So was their no announcement on allowing pensioners to cash in annuities?

I am surprised their was no mention of spending - I would have expected to see at least a token amount bunged at the NHS or do such announcements only take place in the Autumn statement?
    I think....

Another raise in VAT if Tories get back into power

No mention of that in Osbourne's speech, so Milliband really just making stuff up now.

Milliband is right to ask why no mention of the NHS in the speech.

It sounds like an aspirational move, the help to buy ISA.

Will it work? Not sure. I think I know some people who will be working out how to "utilise" such a scheme when supporting their offspring looking to buy though.

Milliband asking why Osbourne has not increased NWM to £7 as he had indicated he would back in September last year.

He can't match the 2 kitchens gag, or even the brothers in arms.

    Poor old Ed.

    The budget was dull.

Milliband's response is rambling nonsense, I think he has forgotten what he is supposed to be doing.
