For the cost, our old ex-council flat (in a block of 6 flats) had secure entry doors fitted and our contribution as leaseholders was £750.

My block (mixed council/private) should be getting Martec steel doors and glazed side panels to Police Secured By Design standard, Stanley GDX intercom and RFID keyfobs for residents.

It's expensive because there are front and back doors to be done. The cost is about £800 x 12 flats.

Our is only the front. We do not have a back door.
Did you experience anti social behaviour yourself or was it the council initiative to install it?

When we lived in a block of HA flats up until last year, we had the same issue as you. However, the door did have an entry system but it didn't stop people getting in. It had a "Trade Button" which has someone mentioned above, meaning anyone could press the trade button between 8am and 5pm and get in straight away.

We also had issues with people being so desperate to get in they figured out if you pulled the door hard enough, it would release - something we complained about frequently.

Before we moved, we had issues with school kids using it as a hang out before school, lunch times and after school (smoking, drug taking, etc) and then in the evenings random people would just be loitering.

So, getting a door system fitted might not be the end of the problem.

There's a trade button on my block of flats - it's on a timer and only works in the morning, effectively just letting the postman in. Presumably you can get the timer set to anything suitable.
  • Where I live (Lambeth) secure doors are being put in under the 'decent homes standard' which is central government money to improve social housing. In mixed blocks, leaseholders have to pay their share.

Can you google that for your area, and see whether the council have made any commitments they could be held to?

Why can't you just put a lock on the door and issue tenants with keys? Your over complicating things, the council tax is better spent elsewhere rather than pampering to an insignificant need when there is a simple solution.

Do you have friends who are door staff ?. A couple of heavies standing guard during the times when the issues occur should deter the scum.

Another deterant would be some CCTV cameras (in anti-vandal cages), they don't have to be real to be effective.

What would you suggest as more imaginative?

Anything that stops this space from being used as it currently is.

*shrug* set up a market stall and start selling cut flowers or something from the shared area.

If the locals are actively using the space, you wouldn't get groups congregating there.

... until you get a door.

Required for the Scottish equivalent of 'decent homes standard'

(It should actually be video entry for blocks with > 8 flats but the council have vetoed that.)
