Wasn't in vehicle - in private car park - advice?!

Recently my car was parked in a private car park, unknown to me somehow my car rolled into the vehicle parked next to it while I wasn't in the car. When I returned to the car the lady who owned the vehicle was there, I apologised and offered to pay her money for damage (was a small dent in the wing) and gave her my phone number, but no other details, and she said it was going to cost £800 because the door and wing was damaged - which I think is exaggerated because the car moved literally 2 feet into hers. I haven't seen a written quote. I said I would pay the cost on my next pay day but she insists on going through insurance. Any advice? I'm 21 and just got 4 years no claims and don't want to lose them and my insurance go up massively next year when I've done everything I can! Thanksj

  • If your car caused damage to hers, she has the right to go through insurance if she wants to.
Despite you causing damage to her car, you honestly expect her to be OK with waiting for the money until payday?

I agree, she has the right to. I just thought it would be better for me to give her the cash to save both parties the hassle of insurance, I don't think that's too much to ask, especially when she just wants £800 and refuses to show me the quote.

Sounds like a greedy cow to me, seeing opportunity and exploiting it.

    Typical.

Maybe but the OP sounds like he's deliberately trying to break the terms and conditions of his insurance.

If he is that desperate not to inform his insurance then she's basically got him by the balls and he need to pay up quick.

He can't have it both ways it's one or the other.

... and the law, if he only gave her his phone number.

The problem is, we've all heard the 'I'll pay you on payday' line. I'm sure you really mean it, but many don't. You're already in danger of becoming a pain by insisting on seeing a quote. What's to stop you asking her to get three quotes, or taking it to a garage owned by a friend of a friend.

Look at it from her point of view: why shouldn't she go through insurance? At least she gets her car fixed that way - she doesn't know if she will by waiting for you.

If it were my mother looking for advice, I'd tell her to claim on insurance, rather than take the risk.

The parking brakes can become less effective once they cool and the vehicle can creep if parked on a slope.
Trouble is the other party didn't park their car with a dent on the wing, depending on the car and where the dent is then the repair can be costly.
I trust you have insurance to deal with such mishaps, you can repay the losses to the insurance thus not losing your no claims.

To be honest if I was in her position I would want to go through insurance too, how would I know you would have the money, and also you saying you need to wait till payday wouldn't encourage me that the funds would turn up.

Will not her insurance go up even for a no fault claim? Having said that with only a phone number to go on you can't blame her.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

How does that work then? It seems to be a major design fault as vehicles will usually park up with hot/warm brakes which will then cool.

I'd love to know the supposed physics behind that statement.
