Though if they require you to put it in the hold because they are too busy, rather than because the bag is too bid/ heavy, there is no charge for this.

Guess it depends if the OP is wanting it in the cabin for cost avoidance or some other reason.

I'm wanting it on board with me for cost avoidance, no other reason. I should get away with it. Thanks everyone.

I'm going to disagree (a bit) with some of the previous advice.

If it's obvious you are squashing it to make it fit, you may not be allowed to take it on board (I have seen it happen).

They are also known to use a portable (cardboard?) checker which they will try to drop over your bag while you're in the queue. You then don't have the opportunity to squeeze it, and if it doesn't fit, you'll have to pay (extra) to check it in.

I think this is a link to a picture (can't view it properly from this PC):

Thanks, i will get some compression straps. Ryanair says i do not need to wait in the queue i can go direct to boarding, i am not sure what they mean as i have never flown before, but i think i go direct to the gates and straight on board so i do not think they will get me with that cardboard measure.

    Hi,

You go straight through to security and not the queue for checking in, then once you are airside there will various screens around which tell you the gate you need to go to.

Some airlines have been known to reject a case if it doesn't fit comfortably in the sizing rack as you are boarding (some of them have the rack at the boarding gate) - as in fits in without being squished :) My experience is Easyjet are a little more flexible and will put the case into the hold free of charge on the busier flights.

    Enjoy your trip :)

My experience of RyanAir is that thats exactly when they do check sizes with the cardboard box to check on the people who are only travelling with handbaggage hoping to get away with it/have been shopping and have squashed more stuff in to make the bag oversize.

Def recommend the compression straps to be certain.

Hubby does it for several reasons,
Cost being the main one, ryanair charge £30 each Way on the main route he uses for hold luggage, but his fare is normally only 25-30 each way.
Speed to exit the airport at the destination,a quick get away
Valuable items that he simply doesn't want in the hold.

You'll miss one queue, but you'll still have to queue at the boarding gate and that's where they are likely to use the cardboard checker.

OK then, the best idea i can think of for not getting my backpack refused, if they stop me and deny me, is to take all my clothes out of it and put them on, then it will fit fine in their checkers.

I really will do this if they will not let me on that plane with my rucksack.

Thanks everyone for the tips too.

Just be careful to remove any valuables if they do have to move it into the hold due to the cabin being full. There was a post on here recently from someone who'd had things stolen from their hand baggage after it was moved into the hold.
