What happens to flights when you split from your partner?

Hi all,

I am due to go to the usa with my partner but the relationship has since ended. I wanted to know where I stood with myself still going on holiday? The hotels and flights were booked desperately but it is the flights I am more concerned about and I am willing to go on my own.

The problem with making bookings desperately is that you may make mistakes... For flights, so long as your name is shown correctly (exactly the same as on your passport) and the dates and airports that you booked are the ones that you wanted, you are free to travel. (A few years ago, someone on this board wanted to fly from Brum to the USA but booked a flight out of Birmingham Alabama!)

I suspect the OP meant to say "separately".
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

So long as you control the booking, you can travel on your own if that is what you want to do. If everything was booked by your ex then try and reach an agreement that you will pay for your flight, if they paid in the first place and then they can cancel their own flight. For accommodation, in the US the price is always per room, so you have to pay the full amount, if the bookings are paid on the day, then there should be no problem, but again, if pre booked you will need to check that the bookings are still there and make an arrangement to repay in due course.

If the relationship ended badly and everything was booked by your ex, it is possible everything has already been cancelled, if you have paid your proportion already, you have to claim it back from your ex, airlines and hotels don't want to get involved in domestic arguments, for very good reasons. Best of luck

Unless you booked very expensive flexible fares, the chances are your flights are non refundable so your ex has little to gain by cancelling (apart from claiming taxes back).

Depending on the airline the ticket might be able to be name changed for a fee. If your ex is the lead passenger (you don't say who booked) they may be able to do this.

But if the booking still stands untouched then there's nothing to stop you travelling. Or your ex. You could both travel and wouldn't even need to check in together or sit with each other.

Speak to the travel agent or airline you made the booking with and ask to be split from the flight booking. This is a common predicament, but once the booking has been split, you retain full control of the ticket in your name, and your ex is free to do what he likes with his ticket.

As long as you aren't changing your flights, you can expect to pay an admin fee of about £25, or get it done for free.
