I'd suggest you look up a computer specialist in your local area such as PC World or Currys and have them diagnose it. They should also be able to repair it if you so wish.

Can you not look in your local paper or newsagents window; there are always adverts for people who will fix your computer - some of them have a no fix no fee approach. As Little John "implies" PC World or Currys are not perhaps the best places to go for computer repairs.!

Dont rush to buy a new computer until you know for certain that is is uneconomical to repair.

I know a few computer engineers up in Scotland, I used to work for a company in East Killbride and then another just outside Glasgow center. if your round the Glasgow area I will give them a call and see if this is the sort of thing they are willing to help with?

    Hi Serendipity,
If the power supply unit (PSU) has died, it may be all that needs replacing. However it could also have killed your motherboard/RAM/CPU processor. If this has happened and you have to buy a new PC you will almost certainly find that your old hard-drive is still OK and can be installed as a "slave" in the new PC. You can then search the old drive to recover your valuable data.
I have done this on numerous occasions often recovering years of company data. Unfortunately I’m not near Scotland, but there must be many enthusiasts or small PC shops who could check out your PC for you.
  • Thanks to everyone who has offered their advice.

Little John, thanks but no where near Glasgow...North, North and North again!!

I will have a search about and see if I can get a local repair guy to come and have a look and will bear in mind the advice about recovering data from original hard drive.

    Regards to all,
