Here :rotfl:
It could be anything, from the power supply to the motherboard, memory or processor.
Does the fan inside on the cpu spin when you turn it on? if it does then the power supply is ok. if not then you need to have a power supply to test it with another PSU (power supply) failures like yours normally its the PSU. you nose is a good thing with dead pc's put itnext to the PSU at the back and see if it smells burnt then stick your nose inside the pc see if anything smells.
Further fault finding involves removeing anything not required, even going all the way back to board and processor in the hope to get some sign of life from the PC. and rebuild it part by part till things stop working again.
A board and cpu will give you a memory error beep code and you know the board, cpu and processor are ok. if you don't get any beeps then its one of those parts.
add the memory and you should get a graphics card been code
if the pc works at this point add the graphics card and connect the monitor you should get an image on the screen.
If that works then connect the hard drive.
Keep adding bits untill it falls over again when it falls remove the last bit you added and hopfully it will work without it, if it does you have found the faulty bit.0 -
Little John, I get what you are saying and understand in theory. But... I am soooo not computer technical and have no idea as to the workings.
I took the side off when it died and you could smell the TCP (ish) smell and some parts were very hot indeed. The fan inside the cpu does not spin.
Perhaps I would be better to pay for an engineer to look at it - do you think? If I was to get a new tower could the work saved on it be transferred?
Thanks Little John.Serendipity13

Well if you can borrow someone elses monitor and use a different plug socket it may be that the monitor has just bust, also try your monitor with another computer. Check that all wires are connected.
If you dont want to mess around with the inside of your pc get an engineer or someone you know who is good with computers to have a look. Providing nothing is wrong with your hard disk (i doubt there is) then you can easily transfer your files to another pc if you remove the hard disk and connect to another computer or get someone else to do it. Though that is only if you have to get a new comp.0 -
At a guess, I think the monitor is working fine.
The tower has no life about it at all. No fans turning, no motor running, no nothing!
I will have a look to see if I can connect the monitor to my laptop to double check that it works OK.
Would you know if I would be looking at a lot of money if I was to get an engineer to look at it. Would I be cheaper just to get a new tower? (I would still use the existing monitor, keyboard, mouse etc).
Oh dear!!
Thanks.Serendipity13

Quick suggestion, could it be the fuse? Might be worth trying that first if the thing appears to be completely dead. May also want to check if there's an on/off switch at the back.
Cheers

If you're uncomfortable removing parts from your computer, I'd suggest you look up a computer specialist in your local area such as PC World or Currys and have them diagnose it. They should also be able to repair it if you so wish.0
