As long as you have proof of purchase from the dealer you're "safe". As long as uou got written proof of payment ESPECIALLY given the lack of a logbook right?.
By safe I mean, if anything goes wrong and goes tits up, that there's finance on the car or the car is stolen etc. You can sue the dealer and get your money back. It's a bit of a headache espeically if delaer doesn't play ball. But in the worst case scenario you'd eventually get your money back.
Without proof of purchase it's a little bit tricky.[/STRIKE]
Oops, this advice would have been valid before electronic vehicle tax. But now it would be quite tricky as you cannot tax it without v5
Yes you can. You go to the post office and fill in a V62 and give them £25.0 -
V62 , is an application for a new/replacement V5 , I thought they wrote to the owner , and if no negative reply was received within a couple of weeks , a v5 was sent to you.
can you actually tax a car with a v62?
copied from a v62 form (online)
If you do not have a V5C or the V5C/2 you will need to fill in this
form and pay a fee. You can pay by cash, direct debit, debit card,
credit card, cheque or postal order (made out to Post Office Ltd.),
Post Office budget card or by traveller’s cheques (in pounds sterling).
If you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle you may not be able
to tax until you get a V5C in your name.

so the OP is driving without road tax , without insurance , or questionable as the car is not registered to him
if he gets stopped , the road tax is an offence (as is the insurance)0
