Bought a car from dealers last week, still waiting on v5 logbook
Last week my girlfriend bought a car from a dealers. We were told that the car didn't have a logbook but it would be ready next week at the latest.
She phoned up today and the dealers still don't have the v5.
What are her rights in this situation. Can the sale be cancelled? Should the dealer provide compensation/ a loan car until it's all sorted?
Thanks in advanced for any help.

What was the reason why they didn't have the V5 when she originally bought it? Has she taken delivery of the vehicle?0

Apparently the car was bought from a guy 3/4 weeks ago that changes his car all the time and he's waiting for it to be returned from Swansea.
I phoned up to chase it up and he said if she wants the car sooner we can apply for a v5 at a cost of £25 - this doesn't sound fair, also wouldn't that incur waiting time?0 -

You should sue. Take them for every penny they've got.0 -

<rolls eyes>
Chill out, OP. If you're happy with the car, wait a week or two. If you don't get anything through, gently lean on them to pay the £25.
Even if the dealer had had the old V5C to hand, you'd not have one in your name yet.0 -
if the car was showing a private plate and the seller wanted the plate off the car then the V5 is sent to swansea for the transfer
last time i did it it took four weeks for the V5 to come back with the original number on it
you will need the V5 or the new keepers supplement to tax the car so they cant let you have it before they have the V5
if you are not happy to wait then talk to the dealer and see what he has to say about it0 -
How did you tax it without the new keeper bit of the V5?PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0

Apparently the dealers have sorted it with the post office to get the tax. They've sent out for a v5 in her name. Can the car legally be sold in this way? We're still to take it off them.
Another issue we were promised proof of millage recorded at past MOTs however they haven't got it. Is there any way to get this information without a v5 or previous MOT certificate? Could we get something in writing to say that if the car was taken away and it transpires the mileage isn't correct we can return for a refund? Ie if when the v5 arrives we should be able to verify details on the vosa website?0 -
Do a DVLA vehicle check and ASK MID to see if the car is insured and taxed and MOT'd before driving it further.
You can see the MOT's online if you have reference numbers from the V5C or current MOT - did the dealer not have this paperwork when the vehicle was picked up.
YOU have to tax it with the reference number on the green new keepers slip.
Was there a previous V5C in the paperwork?"Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -

If you use a previous one, there is a risk that your newly-purchased tax will be refunded to the vendor.0 -
[STRIKE]v5 is not proof of ownership, and it's not proof of sale. So God knows what it proves. Perhaps just to faciliate the administration of issuing tickets etc.
As long as you have proof of purchase from the dealer you're "safe". As long as uou got written proof of payment ESPECIALLY given the lack of a logbook right?.
By safe I mean, if anything goes wrong and goes tits up, that there's finance on the car or the car is stolen etc. You can sue the dealer and get your money back. It's a bit of a headache espeically if delaer doesn't play ball. But in the worst case scenario you'd eventually get your money back.
Without proof of purchase it's a little bit tricky.[/STRIKE]
Oops, this advice would have been valid before electronic vehicle tax. But now it would be quite tricky as you cannot tax it without v50
